We hiked at Taroko Trail Park, which is situated in Modderfontain and forms part of hiking trails in the Johannesburg area. As I entered the park, I realised this was a rather fancy setup. We decided to hike the 11km trail. It’s easy without much elevation. The trail winds alongside a stream, through tree-covered areas, across bridges, past a picnic spot, a small waterfall, and a lake. The Gautrain also passes nearby. The cost is R45 per person. There is a coffee shop, restaurant, mountain bike shop, and the Fourways Farmers Market operates from the same venue. So, afterward, you can get something to eat and drink. It’s always a nice way to end a hike. My overall experience with Taroko Trail Park is positive. The venue looks great, offers a lot, and I can’t think of anything I dislike about it. That is it for a brief review. I hope this inspires you to hike the Taroko trails. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Taroko Trails Park. I got to head out on some beautiful and challenging trails while my girl got to enjoy the joys of the farmers market on site. A great win win for the both of us as we enjoyed a lovely weekend out. A must ride trail system for the mountain bikers out there and a really stunning market for those who enjoy weekend markets. Did not disappoint. Some great food as well, definitely got my moneys worth for a few of the stalls. Only negative point is the ridiculously and unjustifiably high fee for a bike wash… I can get my car cleaned inside and out for cheaper. A bit ridiculous if you ask me considering most parks offer the same service for a third of the price. But each to their own. Still an extremely worth while experience and a must visit venue. Will definitely be back again.

Absolutely love the Taroko Hike Trail. Mainly because it’s so wide, one can run, walk or cycle to their hearts content and in the end if it’s on a Saturday/Sunday get some refreshments at the Fourways Farmers Market. Flat ground, so no hike perse. Quaint waterfall. I spotted some bucks along the way, made my run even better. Not a lot of shaded spots, actually 95% unshaded. So wear a cap, sunscreen and have lots of water. Great photo op spots for the enthusiastic photographers. Picnic section/benches can be found along the runner’s trail. Trails are up to 11km but depending on how you track, could be more. Track can be windy so lengthens the kilometers. It’s safe with fellow runners/bikers/walkers. Great for the family, for clearing ones head and just a leisure 10km.

Based on Tarako Trail Parks' great response to my original post, I've upgraded my review of them now, having a better understanding of the dynamic there, and will shift my review to rightful recipients. The Trail Park is great, clearly marked very pleasant. In addition, they have clearly made an effort, including working on the ongoing surge... litter well done, Taroko Trail Park.

I do encourage those who utilise the facility to please hang on to your rubbish til you reach a bin. If you managed to carry it in, you certainly must be able to carry it out.

Origunal post:

A step too far, and everybody loses.

I loved the venue and an 11k trail run, had great coffees and brekkie bun at Trail Wolf. That all should get 5 stars. However then sadly, it only takes 1 thing to leave a bad taste. Then, I wanted to take a stroll in the market while I savoured the end of my last coffee as my friend had to go. Now I understand why the market manager might not want me to bring a flask and coolbox and set up a picnic in a place that sells coffee, etc... but the rule was too strungently applied. Your engaging security guard was quite clearly frightening to utilise her own discretion for fear of retribution from management. I didn't want to waste the end of my lovely coffee, so sorry for you, scary market manager, we both lost out. I didn't get to satisfy my curiosity about your market, and you didn't benefit from my spent money there, which must surely be...
