'Nelson Mandela Museum' has three components. The physical address shown here is for the museum in Mthatha town, which indeed IS closed, but for renovations (for a ridiculously long time now!) The map, however, shows directions to the part of the museum which is in QUNU (Where Nelson Mandela grew up). This museum IS OPEN!
It is a beautiful heritage site! A must see for South Africans, to remind ourselves of where this country came from. It's also a lovely museum to visit for international visitors, as there is plenty of information and education regarding South African history and the struggle. I took a drive to the museum by myself early last year, and was so impressed by the security guard who was a bit bored, so took me on a little private tour. He was so well informed and interested in the history on our country.
The surrounding rolling hills are absolutely gorgeous! I went on a weekend, so unfortunately could not take a stroll through the crafts market.
I went again with my family in December 2013, just after Madiba passed away, it was busy then. Many many international journalists and news people. There was an amazing vibe and celebration of the life which was our Father Tata Madiba!
Nobody should pass the Eastern Cape without a stop over here. There's no entry fee and secured...
Read moreNever visited anything so appalling in my life. A vast, modern structure where there are a few photos of Nelson Mandela's life around the walls of two otherwise empty rooms. There really is nothing here. Everything is in decay despite it being only 16 years since it was opened. Only one set of female toilets working and they had water running all over the floor. The front gate has wooden slats which are all falling off. There is a huge industrial kitchen in which it looks as though not even an egg has been boiled to serve a closed up conference centre and restaurant. Six staff sit by the gate on plastic chairs or on the ground utterly disinterested though one, wearing an MTN tracksuit did approach us and said he was a guide. No name, no uniform, no knowledge. The access road is so covered in litter and uncleared vegetation that one wonders if it is actually open. Don't be fooled by the photos, this place is a disgrace and must be closed immediately because it is utterly unworthy to be called a museum and makes one want to weep at what Nelson Mandela would think today. 32kms further up the N2 is a correct and very interesting museum in the old Parliament building in Mthatha. Go there....

Having visited over the weekend there were no tour guides we were welcomed by the lady from the front desk however she couldn't take us through the tour as she indicated that she is committed and seemed to be less interested in assisting. .Round of applause to the the two ladies who seemed to be the cleaning staff . They met us at the passages wearing their brought smiles they both wanted to know if we are fine and also pointed to us some of the areas not to miss within the museum. They made our day. Generally the destination is excellent an improvement just needed at the frontline desk .I will definitely visit the...
