Yesterday, at around 4:30 PM, I visited the tidal pool for an evening swim. I was disappointed by the poor condition of the area. The tidal pool surroundings were noticeably unkempt, and there was a strong smell of urine. Unfortunately, I can understand why.
The public restrooms adjacent to the pool were already closed, and I witnessed a woman, in apparent desperation, urinate right outside the closed toilets. This occurred in the very passage everyone must cross to reach the Hole in the Wall. While her actions were unpleasant and inconsiderate, I believe she had expected the facilities to be open when she arrived.
It is deeply concerning that there is no barrier to prevent urine from entering the tidal pool. The urine drips directly into the pool, raising serious concerns about water contamination.
The persistent smell of urine suggests that this may not be an isolated incident. Additionally, the building itself is in need of significant upgrades. The area is dark and uninviting in the evening, and improved lighting, such as floodlights, would greatly enhance safety and aesthetics.
This situation is particularly unfortunate given how beautiful and family-friendly the rest of the beach is. I strongly urge the municipality to address these...

It's a bit of a walk if you are approaching it from Ocean Drive, but well worth it. I've griven it 5 stars because I like that the walk makes the beach a little less crowded. That said, my dad using a walking stick, was easily able to manage the walk from both the street capital ad well as from Rock Road view point.
Beautiful scenery, a lively little bay to swim in with life guards on duty (can be very rough at high tide), and the most amazing tidal pool, filled with developing coral reefs and a number of fish species, including some very large specimen of parrot fish. Excellent for snorkeling at low tide and adventurous at high tide when the waves break over the rock walls!
No shops, so bring your own refreshment, but there are icecream vendors...
Read moreIt was 1 Sunday morning and it was literally a hot morning. I felt I could do a walk on the beach or just go for a peaceful drive along the beach roads. So driving along Ballito side & we ended up in this beautiful serene atmosphere. Its called the hole in the wall in Thompson’s bay were not many people know about this place. Very exciting. I will be sure to visit this beauty again coming very early along with my picnic basket and well dressed for the beach and tidal pool. Loved climbing up the rocks and just sitting there enjoy nature. Hearing the sound of the waves and birds chirping and singing. Not much of a walk going down to the beach. Very safe. Lots of parking. Just park your car. There are car guards..& walk you go. Be sure to carry everything with you otherwise you will have to walk up again. This was quiet an adventure....
