We (two older guys with our South African guide, Thiam) purchased a landscape from the father, Kobus, during a visit back in October of 2021. This was the tail end of the COVID tourism drought and we enjoyed a delightful experience. We looked at everything and discussed much of it with the proprietors, who were happy to regale us with fun, informative facts. We must have spent almost two hours chatting before settling upon a landscape of the Karoo and Koppies under a stormy sky, which is apparently one of the artist's favorite themes). Staring at it on my dining room wall brings back fond memories of stark but stunning landscapes and friendly folk. I can heartily recommend a visit to the gallery if you find yourself passing through Bloemfontein.
An aside for Mariaan, who I believe may appreciate it. Paulo and I were recently at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. We got there early and were treated to five full minutes alone in the room with the museum's most famous painting. I raced to this room as soon as the doors opened, with Paulo hobbling along behind me, hoping to enjoy an uncrowded room but I NEVER expected to have 5 minutes alone. While I was standing in awe of this masterwork, Paulo entered the room, panting, and plopped down on a bench. I beckoned him over: "come look at this". He turned and said "What, the blue thing?" The "blue thing", as he called it, is Van Gogh's "Starry Nights" and I expect that Vincent is doing cartwheels in his grave. I recall some of your works, Mariaan, and thought this story might amuse you....
Read moreWe visited Kotze Gallery and we were pleasantly surprised by the large volume and variety of spectacular local artists (South African) represented. A beautifully creative space. The Kotze's are a well-known painting family and work by all of them is available here. Also offers a splendid range of ceramics and sculptures. Floris Kotze is an exceptional host and walked us through the gallery, he is extremely knowledgeable and most importantly extremely up-front and honest. I would not for a second doubt his recommendations on what art would suit your needs and what art to invest in. If you want to add to your art collection or start a collection, this is one of the best galleries in the country to visit. Trust me my wife and I are both artists and art and galleries are our passion, you want to visit the...
Read moreWe were at the gallery just the other week for the exhibition Kobus Kotze at the Kotze Kunsgalery and I was left stunned!
As I write this I feel it is essential I should comment on the decor. The spacing is comfortable and lively giving off the artistic classy aura wich is so important for a gallery of such kind. The whole building just screams to compliment the art with a warm heart.
Furthermore, I should also tell you of the owner himself. Floris Kotze is a happy host. From the moment you walk through those doors you are welcomed with open arms and service is at its best.
Whether you are a local or visiting bloemfontein: I highly recommend you take a drive to the Kotze Kunsgalery and get a glimpse of the...
