The Big Hole Museum – A Worthwhile Visit, But Could Be Better
The Big Hole Museum in Kimberley offers an interesting glimpse into the history of the town and its famous diamond mine, earning a 3.5-star rating overall.
The museum provides a solid historical overview, with informative exhibits about the mining history, the development of Kimberley, and the impact of diamonds on the region. The guided tours are engaging, and the knowledgeable staff add great value to the experience, making it easy to understand the significance of the Big Hole and its role in South African history.
However, there are a few areas where the museum could improve. The exhibits, while informative, could use an update to make them more interactive and visually engaging, especially for younger visitors. Some sections of the museum felt a bit outdated, and additional interactive displays or multimedia elements could make the visit more immersive.
The site is well-maintained, but there’s still potential to make it more visitor-friendly. The surrounding area offers great views, but additional amenities or attractions would enhance the overall experience.
While The Big Hole Museum is definitely worth visiting for history buffs and those interested in Kimberley’s mining past, it could benefit from a few improvements to fully realize its potential as a major tourist...

Hello Stopbiki friends! It’s me, BIKI the explorer, and wow… I just saw the biggest hole I’ve ever seen that wasn’t in the ocean! 😲
Right in the heart of Kimberley lies The Big Hole – the world’s largest hand-dug hole. Humans dug it with picks and shovels to find shiny diamonds – over 2,700 kg of them! That’s more treasure than I’ve ever seen under the sea! 💎💎💎
I walked (well, wobbled) through the amazing old town, saw a real diamond vault, and even looked down into the giant hole from a sky-high platform. It’s super safe and perfect for families – with loads to learn and fun things to see.
So if you love adventure, history, and sparkly things, The Big Hole is the place to be!

A well placed viewing structure helps the visitor appreciate the engineering feat of the early diggers against a backdrop of modern Kimberley. The surrounding historical town has been relocated from its original site to be incorporated into museum grounds. I loved the tram ride. The window shopping experience and visits to the doctor and bank is fascinating if you have any interest in the artefacts of past at all. The underground mine experience is really rattling if you have never been underground before. The museum exhibits related to the mining activities of Kimberley are super. This De Beers set up smacks of generous funding. Now whoever has those monstrous diamonds, can we have them...
