I recently visited Muratie Wine Estate, a place I often bring friends and family when they visit the Cape. I have always been captivated by the estate's rich history and the fascinating story behind it. However, on my recent visit, I experienced a significant letdown due to the lack of knowledge displayed by our hostess, Jaqculine.
As someone who highly regards the heritage and significance of Muratie Wine Estate, I always set high expectations for the experience I share with my guests. I take pride in showcasing the farm's historical background and the expertise of their staff, ensuring my guests have an enriching experience. Unfortunately, Jaqculine's lack of understanding about the farm's history and the winemaking process was a source of great embarrassment for me.
It is disheartening when a hostess at such a renowned estate fails to possess even the basic knowledge about the farm and its wines. The essence of a wine tasting experience lies in unraveling the story behind the vineyard, exploring its roots, and discovering the intricate details that make each wine unique. However, in this instance, it seemed as though the pouring of the wines took precedence over enlightening visitors about the estate's legacy.
I have always held Muratie Wine Estate in high regard for its commitment to preserving its heritage and crafting exceptional wines. However, I strongly believe that it is crucial for the staff, especially those in a hostess role, to embody the spirit of the farm and be well-informed ambassadors. The ability to share the captivating narrative behind the estate and its wines not only adds depth to the tasting experience but also leaves a lasting...
Read moreWhat a lovely sight for sore eyes!!! Nestled at the foot of the mountains just outside Stellenbosch city centre, lies the "Garden of Eden"...called Murati Wine Estate! With clear views of Table Mountain...lush foliage, little fountains here and there, and then of cause, the farm house itself where everything happens. We were seated outside under stunning old oak trees and umbrellas scattered everywhere...it was heaven on earth...with lots of natural beauty surrounding you, feeding your "eco soul". The staff were friendly and informative...the menu catered for everyone. We were almost sure, that given the delight for our eyes on arrival ( the stunning garden surrounding the old farm house like an Emerald Green necklace)...that its was too good to be true, and that we might be disappointed with the food. So we dived into the menu, excited by the choices and wondering which would be the best item to choose...we settled on the Lamb Shank, and for me, the Ceasar Salad. Result: The helpings were generous, the food layout on the plate was well placed and appetizing. The taste: really an explosion of taste, and texture( well done chef!)...both meals I will highly recommend. Bus tours should NOT miss this venue! The highlight...you have to do the wine tasting!! This estates wine is not to be missed, and not to mention the the staff's passion when explaining the different cultivars, and taking you through the history of the estate ( which is really interesting) I rate this farms food, wine and staff....5 stars. I would book on line ahead of arriving ( they were prompt and very...
Read moreBeautiful space and the wine cellars have a lot of history. Loved the mini tour within the cellars given by the very friendly and welcoming staff just because we were new to the space. The charcuterie board and the wine we had was so super. Had the lamb shank and think the Karoo lamb curry but it was OK.
To the manager of the restaurant though: Unfortunately the restaurant waiters seemed to be inexperienced junior college students and didn't seem to know the menu well and couldn't explain or recommend wine or food clearly. When asked for a wine recommendation to pair with their lamb shank dish, the one waiter replied red wine and proceeded to name types of wine instead of a specific bottle recommendation. This was unexpected coming from an establishment like this. When we asked another waiter about a certain dish, that waiter also seemed very unsure and confused and tried to explain it with very little confidence. I think this might be due to lack of training and experience can probably be fixed with better expertise of the food and wine. The food was OK but did lack flavor and quality.
The staff from the wine cellars seemed to be way more experienced and helpful. I address this because most waiters at a restaurant within a wine estate are experts on the menu and so we're hoping to expect more on the next possible...
