Actually, I wanted to buy my annual wine supply that day at a winery that does not belong to Jean Engelbrecht. Not because Engelbrecht's wines are not good. No. On the contrary, all of Engelbrecht's companies produce excellent wine. But today I was at Stellenbosch Vinyards and met Megan Griesel. The young lady, pretty and cosmopolitan, sensed that I wanted to buy more than one bottle of wine. And so it turned into several cases. For the first time, I could see what Stellenbosch Vinyards has become. Incredible winery boasting an extensive range of wines which you can taste. The tasting experience ranges from R60 for the standard (5 wines), R90 for the premium and R120 for the ultra premium.
The standard range is great, including a mix of light whites, roses and medium bodied reds, as well as the infusion ranges. The more expensive tasting are rather heavier. The winery also offers chocolate pairing which is great for couples and families.
The service is efficient and friendly and they are certainly not stingy in the amount you are offered to taste. In addition, if you purchase a fair amount of wine to take home, your tasting can be free. I discovered Swirl a few months ago during a business lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Delicious small tapas and excellent wines served with a smile in a bright airy environment.
