If you're ever in the Western Cape region of South Africa and find yourself craving a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and creativity, the Elgin Railway Market is an absolute must-visit. Tucked away in the picturesque Elgin Valley, this market isn't just any ordinary market – it's a delightful fusion of local flavors, artisan crafts, and historic charm all set against the backdrop of an old apple warehouse.

From the moment you step onto the platform, you're greeted by a vibrant atmosphere buzzing with energy. The converted railway station exudes character, with its rustic beams and vintage signage transporting you back to a bygone era of steam trains and industrial hustle. But don't let the nostalgia fool you; this market is anything but stuck in the past.

One of the highlights of the Elgin Railway Market is undoubtedly the food. Whether you're a dedicated foodie or just looking for a tasty bite, you'll be spoiled for choice with the array of culinary delights on offer. From sizzling street food stalls serving up tantalizing tacos and gourmet burgers to artisanal bakeries dishing out freshly baked bread and pastries, there's something to satisfy every craving.

And let's not forget about the local produce – fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and wines sourced directly from the surrounding farms and vineyards. It's a true celebration of the region's bounty, and the quality speaks for itself.

But the Elgin Railway Market isn't just about food; it's also a hub of creativity and craftsmanship. Wander through the aisles and you'll discover a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from unique jewelry and clothing to intricate pottery and artwork. It's the perfect place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir or gift while supporting local artisans and makers.

Of course, no visit to the Elgin Railway Market would be complete without indulging in a bit of live music and entertainment. Sit back, relax, and soak in the sounds of talented local musicians as you enjoy your meal and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

Overall, the Elgin Railway Market is a charming destination that perfectly captures the essence of South Africa's Western Cape. Whether you're a visitor passing through or a local looking for a weekend escape, it's a place where good food, great company, and creative inspiration come together in perfect harmony. So hop on board and prepare for a culinary journey you won't...

I recently took a trip on the Elgin Railway, and let me tell you, it was such a delightful experience! From the moment I stepped on board, I felt the charm of this vintage train. The interior is cozy and adorned with lovely details that take you back in time. It's like stepping into a storybook!

As we rolled through the beautiful countryside, I couldn’t help but marvel at the scenery. The lush greenery and rolling hills looked absolutely breathtaking from the window. It was the perfect way to unwind and appreciate nature's beauty, all while enjoying the gentle rhythm of the train.

The staff on the Elgin Railway were incredibly friendly and accommodating. They genuinely seemed to love sharing this experience with passengers, which added a warm touch to the journey. Plus, there were some interesting tidbits shared about the local history that made the ride even more enjoyable.

I also appreciated that there were plenty of opportunities to take photos, especially at a few scenic stops we made along the way. It felt like every moment was picture-perfect!

Overall, my trip on the Elgin Railway was a joyful escape from daily life. I left with a big smile and great memories. Whether you’re a train enthusiast or just looking for a fun day out, I highly recommend...

Sadly- this was my least favorite activity in my short time (one week) in Capetown. The information from the train staff was not forthcoming - as we were delayed several times. I was almost late for an evening experience due to the delays. Perhaps they can't tell when it will break down - but....since i had limited time - this is not how I would have spent it.

Add to it - the market at the other end is vastly over rated, described, promoted. It is cute - but it was not worth my 6 hours on the train. It was a nice food court with picknic tables and several eating choices - and a few shops.

IF I lived in Capetown and had spare time or wanted a day with my family MAYBE this would be a once every few years excursion.....or a romantic day out with wine with a friend...but not a regular event or a tourist even (unless you LOVE steam trains).

Eh. I guess the universe wanted me to sit for many hours on that day.

I cannot recommend it for tourists on limited time (under 3 weeks).

NOTE: I was given several times to arrive in teh m orning - the final tiem was 7:15 - the train left...

The Elgin Railway Market seems to have mixed reviews. Some people enjoy the atmosphere and the variety of food stalls, while others like myself experience long waiting times and bad quality of the food. If you're considering visiting the market, it's important to be aware of these potential drawbacks. It's a good idea to do some research on the different food. Salt and sea had a 20mins waiting period, when returned after 20mins for our order and they asked us to wait for another 10mins. Seems like they can't work under pressure. The presentation is so good but the quality is not up to scratch! Calamari was so tough I had to give it to the cleaner that passed by to take it away, the fish was just as tough! We gave it to the cute little cat that was wandering around. One of our guests that we invited with us to the market order the Elgin burger from The Station grill as recommended by many but that was so dry, the pattie was raw and the bun was burnt this was definitely not worth the price. The food was such a waste of money , Perhaps just a bad day for The Elgin Railway Market!
