*This review is from a professional photographer from the USA, with over twenty years of hiking experience.

Lion's Head trail was incredibly easy to find. We used UBER to get us from our hotel in Kaapstad to the trailhead. It cost us about $8 USD.

I brought a Nikon D850 DSLR and 50mm lens to minimize my weight for the climb up. In retrospect, I could have gone with my 24-70mm 2.8, because the hike up in my opinion was easy/moderate.

There is a lot of chatter out there about muggings and thievery. We went in the early afternoon with plenty of people around. Everyone appeared to be legitimate hikers and we hiked in a group of 2. I was in no way, ever concerned about someone trying to steal my gear. I am a white male, 5'10" and 170lbs. My co-hiker was a white female and 5'5".

There are a few points where you will need to scramble on rocks to climb up. They can be challenging for those with little hiking experience. I watched TWO different dads hike up with infants on their backs. I would NOT suggest this, because there is loose rock on the trail.

Our weather was windy and the temperature was about 68 degrees F. We wore layers of exercise clothes and running shoes. Layers are key because it did get cool when we stopped.

The trail is poorly marked once you get about 1/2 way up. There was a spot where we started to use a switchback to go up, but it turned out to be the wrong way. If you stay on the beaten path and go around the mountain in a circle (no switchbacks) you will make it to the top. We were up and down in 3 hours, but could've done it in 2, if we tried.

We opted the EASY route (Not using chains/ladders affixed to mountain) to get to the top, only to find out it is not the true summit. I spotted a hiker scrambling rocks to go even higher from where we were and I followed to get to the very top. Unfortunately, this is NOT the correct way to the top. You must take the "DIFFICULT" route (ie chains/ladders route) to get to the very top of the mountain. This was not labeled anywhere on signage.

If you take the easy route and wish to make it to the very top, you need to scramble and free climb some pretty big boulders, and if like me, and need to regroup with others on the plateau (false summit) below, you will need to take the DIFFICULT route down, reconnect to the easy route and double back up.

It took me 7 minutes from the false summit to the top of Lions Head. It took me 14 minutes down from the real summit, back around and up to regroup at the false summit.

The sights are absolutely breathtaking and this hike is highly recommended for beginner hikers, because it is easy to turn around at any point, and you get amazing views after hiking...

Lions Head is an absolutely gorgeous hike and easily one of the best spots to get fantastic 360° views of Cape Town, the ocean, and the surrounding Table Mountain National Park.

The trail is beginner-friendly and easy to follow, but definitely steep and a little challenging as well. You hike up and come back down the same way, and can turn around safely at almost any point if needed. The hike starts with a dirt path at a good incline, and most beginners hiking at a casual pace can complete the round trip in about 2 hours. Make sure to factor in extra time for breaks, as needed, and to enjoy the incredible views from the top.

Challenge: Higher up, you'll come across ladders and chains at two points and will need to climb over some rocks. However, no climbing experience is needed, but this portion of the trail may also be tough if you're uncomfortable with heights.

Safety: It’s usually quite busy, especially in the summer. This is probably one of the safest hikes in Cape Town due to the amount of foot traffic, but it’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings and don’t carry unnecessary valuables. Some people bring cameras, just bring a bag or backpack to keep it in.

What to wear: I recommend wearing sports shoes with good grip or comfortable trainers, and bringing at least a bottle (250ml) of water (more if it’s hot). Even if the weather looks fine, pack a light jacket or a light long sleeve shirt, it can change quickly on the mountain. If you’re planning a sunrise or sunset hike, definitely bring a headlamp. Wear comfortable clothes and consider a cap/hat on hot or high UV days.

There are great spots at the top to chill, eat a snack, and take some memorable photos. Just remember to leave no trace and take your litter with you as there are no trash bins on the route itself.

Sometimes there’s a small coffee/snack truck at the bottom of the trail. Parking can be tricky during peak times or weekends, so plan ahead. No toilets or water points on the trail.

Dog walking is allowed in the Table Mountain National park, but I wouldn’t recommend it on this trail due to the light climbing up ladders.

Highly recommend this hike for visitors and...

I recently had the pleasure of joining Muki Venture for a guided hike to Lions Head, and I cannot express enough how incredible the experience was. From booking the trip to the hike itself, everything was seamless and enjoyable.

First and foremost, our guide was exceptional. Muki Venture's team is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the mountains and nature. Our guide's expertise and enthusiasm for the surroundings made the hike even more special. They provided us with valuable information about the flora, fauna, and history of Lions Head, making the experience educational and enriching.

The hike itself was remarkably beautiful. The scenery along the trail was breathtaking, with stunning views of Cape Town, Table Mountain, and the shimmering coastline. Our guide ensured that the pace was comfortable for everyone in the group, allowing us to fully enjoy the hike and take in the picturesque surroundings. They were also attentive to each individual's needs, making sure everyone felt safe and supported throughout the ascent.

The highlight of the hike was reaching the summit of Lions Head. The panoramic views from the top were simply awe-inspiring. Watching the sunset over the city while standing atop the rocky outcrop was an unforgettable moment. Our guide was kind enough to capture some remarkable photos of the group, ensuring that we had memories to cherish forever.

Muki Venture's professionalism and attention to detail were evident throughout the entire journey. The communication before the hike was prompt and helpful, ensuring that we were well-prepared for the adventure. The equipment provided was in excellent condition, and the safety measures taken were reassuring.

In summary, if you're looking for an extraordinary hiking experience in Cape Town, I highly recommend Muki Venture. Embark on the guided Lions Head hike, and you'll be treated to exceptional guides, stunning scenery, and memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Muki Venture, for delivering such a remarkable adventure!
