In the desolate expanse of South Georgia lies Grytviken, a forsaken whaling station that once thrived on the butchery of leviathans. Established in 1904 by the Norwegian sea captain Carl Anton Larsen, this place was the epicenter of industrial whaling in the South Atlantic.

Walking through Grytviken today, you’re surrounded by the rusting remnants of a bygone era—decaying ships, dilapidated buildings, and the skeletal remains of whales that met their end here. It’s a haunting reminder of humanity’s relentless pursuit of profit at the expense of nature.

In the graveyard overlooking the bay rests Sir Ernest Shackleton, the Antarctic explorer whose expeditions are the stuff of legend. His final resting place adds a poignant touch to this ghost town, a testament to the indomitable human spirit amidst desolation.

While Nantucket basked in the glory of its whaling heyday, Grytviken stands as a stark monument to the industry’s darker side—a place where the pursuit of the mighty whale led to environmental devastation and, ultimately,...

The coast is pretty tall mountains (hard to judge from a distance with no yardstick such as tree or buildings). The mountains drop rather precipitously into the sea with few areas for a boat to land or penguins to come ashore. A few glaciers enter directly in the sea. The bay we ended up was a quite bay which used to be the whaling harbor. A bunch of rusted buildings and big machines are still there. There is a church!! and a tiny museum that mostly deals with the whaling and sealing industries and recall the Shackelton expedition. The cemetery also has the grave of Shackelton. The afternoon was beautiful and the elephant seals were just sleepy. Mostly juvenile without the wrinkled nose, and mothers with tiny pups. We took lots of pictures, 1600 between the two of us. We did a very long walk and took leisurely pictures...

I visited here in 1986 as part of a Royal Navy Protection Force. The beach from the main whaling station all the way to the cemetery was knee deep in whale bones. The only clear space was inhabited by elephant seals, penguins and the odd skua. The main store still had foot-long Osram 1000W light-bulbs in their corrugated cardboard boxes. Tin cans, cutlery and plates laying on tables as if lain yesterday (then sprinkled with copious amounts of dust). I had more pictures but floods and mould took them.

This is the location where one of the great Antarctic Explorers Earnest Shackleton is buried. The story of his climbing over the mountains to this station with two others is one of the great inspirational adventures of all time. This led to his saving the lives of most of his expedition in the early 1900s located on Elephant Island. Without this station the whole expedition would have perished. For this reason alone, this not used now whaling station is worth visiting. I bow down to his grave.

Closed due to bird flu (Jan 2024). Even so, you can see what you need at a distance, e.g. from the harbor. There's not really a lot to see. A bunch of rusting equipment.
