Boryeong Chungcheong Suyeongseong Fortress — Attraction in Boryeong-si

사적 제 501호 Historical Site No. 501 노을 정말 예쁜 수영성은 조선 초기에 설치된 충청수영은 충청도 해안을 방어하는 최고 사령부 역할을 하였으며, 조운선의 보호와 안내 그리고 외적 방어 역할을 하다가 1896년 폐영되었다.

충청수영성은 1510년 수사 이장생이 돌로 쌓은 성이며, 현재는 윗부분이 무지개 모양인 서문을 비롯하여 1,650m가 남아 있다. 북벽과 남벽은 산등성이를 따라 쌓았고, 서벽은 바다와 면한 지점에 쌓았으며, 서벽 앞은 유(U)자 모양의 포구를 이루어 전형적인 조선 시대 수군진의 모습을 하고 있다. 성내에는 많은 건물이 있었는데 그 중 영보정은 천하 명승으로 알려져 조선 시대 유명 시인 묵객들이 방문하여 많은 시문을 남기기도 했다. 충청수군은 임진왜란 때는 남해 바다에서 통제사 이순신과 연합 작전을 전개하였고, 특히 칠천량 해전(1597)에서는 수사 최호가 통제사 원균과 연합하여 싸우다가 함께 전사하였다. 병자호란(1636) 때는 수사 강진흔이 강화도 갑곳에서 청군을 방어하는 등 국가 위기 시에 큰 역할을 하였다. 현재 우리나라 다른 수영성 유적은 훼손되어 원래의 경관을 잃어 버렸지만 이곳 충청수영성은 지형과 함께 경관이 잘 보존되고 있다.

충청수영성은 조선 중종 4년(1509) 수군절도사 이장생이 돌을 막쌓아 올린 석성(石城)으로 길이는 1,650m 이다.

성 내 있는 오천항은 백제시대 부터 중국과 교역하던 항구였고, 고려시대 에는 왜구를 방어하기 위해 군선(軍船)을 두었으며, 세조 12년(1466년) 수영(水營)을 설치 하였다.

세종실록지리에 따르면 조선 초기 충청수영과 그 산하에 군선(軍船) 142척, 수군 8,414명으로 규모가 컸다.

충청수영은 임진왜란 발발 이듬해 1593년 부터 삼도수군통제영의 지휘를 받았다. 정유재란 때 에는 충청수사 최호가 충청수영의 본영과 속진의 수군을 이끌고 남해 한산도에 주둔하였고, 이듬해인 선조 30년(1597년 7월 15일) 칠천량해전에서 패하여 원균과 함께 전사했다.
