En 1950, Corea del Norte, apoyada por China y la URSS, invadió Corea del Sur. USA apoyó a Corea del Sur para repeler la invasión y esto desencadenó la llamada Guerra de Corea. Colombia envió 5.100 soldados a apoyar a USA, 163 hombres del Batallón Colombia perdieron la vida, 448 resultaron heridos, 30 se convirtieron en prisioneros de guerra y 60 desaparecieron.

Estas son unas palabras del mayor general Blackshear Bryan, de las tropas norteamericanas, sobre los soldados colombianos: "He combatido en tres guerras. Un monumento en honor a los soldados colombianos que colaboraron en la guerra de Corea. Un parque pequeño muy bien tenido, servicios públicos muy limpios, fácil de llegar por metro o bus. Lástima que ya no se llame Parque...
