The Manjanggul Lava Tube is located in Gimnyeong-ri, Gujwaeup, Jeju City. At up to 23m wide, 30m high and 8.928km long, it is the 12th-longest lava tube in the world and the second longest on Jeju island. It is regarded as having significant scientific and heritage value, owing to its excellent condition of preservation despite its age of formation (about 300,000 to 200,000 years ago). Lava stalactites and lava stalagmites, lava columns, lava flowstone, lava helictites, lava blisters, cave coral, benches, lava rafts, lava bridges, lava shelves, grooved lava striations, and ropy lava are well-preserved. Among them, a lava column of 7.6 m is the largest known in the world. There are three entrances and No. 2 heading southward is open to the public. Entrance No. 3 contains the most favorable habitats for cave life and between Entrances 1 and 2, there is a lower level main tube where most of the living creatures can be found. In the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, the Manjanggul Lava Tube has the greatest number of living creatures, including the Jeju cave-spider. In the upper part of Entrance 2, there are at least 30,000 common bent-wing bats forming the largest colony of bats confirmed to be living in Korea so far.

Fascinating cave that you'd never know was there if it weren't for the small bus stop off the main road and the few mentions of it on traffic signs. It feels like it's kind of in the middle of nowhere, and getting to it by public transportation takes a little while from Jeju City (and even longer from Seogwipo), but it's worth it. Although there is some of the flourescent, Christmas-style lighting in the cave which is so common in Asian countries, it is relatively tame and for the most part doesn't interfere with the natural beauty of the cave. And man, is it beautiful. The size of the cave in some areas is really impressive, and the rock formations on the walls and the ceilings are equally impressive. Walking the length of the cave doesn't take very long and the walk is for the most part flat, but since it's a cave there is no shortage of moisture, so a decent pair of hiking shoes wouldn't be a bad idea, but even in sneakers, Manjanggul is a pretty easy stroll for almost anyone. Highly recommended

This is no mere cave, but a lava tube, and one of South Korea's greatest natural wonders. Though over 13 km long (it is the 2nd longest lava tube in the world), only 1 kilometre of the lava tube is open for visitation. Formed only around 300,000 years ago at the most, the cave is beautifully preserved, making it of great scientific interest. It contains all the features you may expect in a normal gave, with the only difference being that these are made of ancient lava - lava stalagmites and stalactites, lava columns and lava bridges and lava shelves, lava blisters and lava helictites, lava rafts and lava ropes. Furthermore, its 7.6 metre high lava column is the largest found so far. The other great feature is the colossal Stone Turtle. The lighting is dim and eerie. There is also a museum on site, and tourists frequently confuse it with the cave entrance which it is NOT. It's still worth checking out, as it explains the cave's origins and features.

* Note: if you're driving in Jeju, you should download the Naver maps that has english navigations guidance available; google maps does not provide navigation in Korea. If you require driving tips/guide in jeju, go to my profile and look for my review for lotte rent a car auto house. * Another must visit attraction in Jeju! Parking is aplenty here and there's and entrance fee of just a few dollars. Be advised that this is an underground lava cave and temperatures will drop very quickly; I'm talking about 35° in summer time to 18° once you enter underground. Consider bringing a jacket. Inside the cave there will be water dipping everywhere. Consider bringing along a poncho or something. The cave extends about 1km in to the end and it takes about 40mins to go back and forth.

The Manjanggul Lava Tube is a unique attraction compared to what the other things Jeju island has to offer. While the lava/rock formations are beautiful, it is a challenging 1km walk to the end of the tube. Kids and elderly folks will find problems walking on uneven grounds in dimly lit settings. The constant dripping from the ceiling caused the floor to be very slippery too. There are signs to explain the different rock/lava formations such as the lava raft and lava toes. These are interesting educational content available in several languages such as English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. If you're fit enough and this is your cup of tea, go for it. Be sure to go in with proper footwear. Else, you might want to rethink visiting.

The walk was interesting, but I wouldn't recommend coming here.😪 The lack of adequate lighting makes it difficult to see anything worthwhile, except for a small section at the very end that is lit up. Most of the way is just darkness, with an uneven floor of boulders and pools of water that make it very slippery. The constant dripping water from the roof also adds to the potential hazard. People of any age can easily get injured, so it's definitely not suitable for the elderly. Only a few sections have raised platforms for safe walking. Additionally, even though the walk may be long, the lack of visibility makes it hard to appreciate. If you want to see a lava tube, there are easier and better-lit ones available on the island.
