Castillo de Almodóvar del Río is a castle of Muslim Berber origin in the town of Almodóvar del Río, Province of Córdoba, Spain. Previously a Roman fort, the current structure is of Moorish Berber origin, in the year 760. During the Middle Ages, it underwent several renovations and reconstructions. Between 1901 and 1936, it was restored by the owner Raphael Desmaissiers, 12th Count of Torravala, under the technical direction of the architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova. The most important towers are the Cuadrada, the Redonda, and the Homenaje. It is situated 15 miles (24 km) from Córdoba, on the left bank of the Guadalquivir. Part of the 7th season of the HBO series Game of Thrones was filmed at the castle. It depicted House Tyrell's home Highgarden, and also parts of Casterly Rock, the ancestral home of House Lannister.

Truely SPECTACULAR castle. TOTALLY worth a detour or a deliberate addition to an itinerary. Castle has lots to explore, good descriptions in Spanish, English, French and German. Lots of spectacular views over Aldomovar del Seville town, over the valley, as well as the whole battlements are accessible as are around 9 towers and the dungeons, Chapel and many other rooms. For some the connection to Game of Thrones would be a reason to visit, but it is worth of a visit without that. While there are references to GoT at multiple point the real castle history is still the dominant theme. It would have been good to see more about its strategic history going back to the times of the Moors all the way up to the present day. But that would have made it 6 Stars.

You can't get much more castle-y...If you asked someone to draw a castle, it would look exactly like this! Although it originally dates back to the 8th (?) Century, most of it is a more modern restoration. However, they've really made an effort to make it a fun visit for all ages, with exhibits on the history and restoration of the castle, actors in costume, and beautiful views from every angle. Game of Thrones fans will recognise it as High Garden. Being an old castle, there are a lot of steps, so it's not really suited to prams or anyone who might struggle going up and down a lot, but there is a picnic area where you can take a break. It's a great trip out of Córdoba on a nice day.

One of the most beautiful castles we ever visited. It was in ruins and then rebuilt in the early 1900s. It's on a nice hill that overlooks a small village. Getting there is quite an adventure. We took the 250 bus from the train station. There bus takes about 30 minutes. The last bus back to Cordova is around 6.30pm, so make sure you don't miss it. Go early in the day when it's warm and sunny, and then get back before 3pm. The exhibits are limited, but the description plaques are in English and 3 other languages. Highgarden from game of thrones was filmed down here.

ESPLÉNDIDO castillo. Sin palabras es decir poco de cómo salí tras visitar el castillo. Quizá por su estado (aunque reconstruido) o quizá por asociarlo indudablemente con Altojardín (castillo de la familia Tyrell en Juego de Tronos). Aunque parezca caro visitarlo (la entrada son 10€ y por lo que nos dijeron, no hay ningún tipo de descuento), merece cada euro invertido. Puedes visitar casi el 100% del castillo (excluyendo el palacio neogótico del patio de armas, pues es de uso privado de los propietarios del castillo) y cada rincón esconde mucha historia real o ficticia (haciendo alusión a la serie). Preciosa es la torre del homenaje, la más alta del castillo, y con un balcón espléndido desde la que disfrutar de las vistas o asustarse por ver la guarnición de los Lannister; cuenta con varias plantas, desde la “azotea”, al salón del trono y bajando hasta las mazmorras. El enorme patio de armas, donde entrenarían los soldados del castillo; el palacio neogótico construido por el Conde de Torralba (propietario y artífice de la reconstrucción del castillo cuando lo heredó en estado ruinoso a principios del S. XX; y un gran aljibe en el que se almacenaba la mayor parte del agua. La capilla, redonda y espectacular con su gran cúpula tallada. El comedor, ahora perfectamente decorado y equipado y que te hacen sentir como si disfrutaras de un banquete en el S. XII. Las torres redonda, de la escucha (importante para escuchar posibles acercamientos de enemigos), de la ceniza (llamada así por ser descubierta un miércoles de ceniza y la del Maestre, que acoge un pequeño museo con piezas encontradas en las excavaciones de la fortaleza. Visita 100% recomendable!!
