This is a great hike, located on the fringe of the Los Cristianos urbanization. I climbed from the southwestern side (Calle La Marea); this is a straightforward climb of 1.5-2.0 hours, with a well-defined trail, and without any dangerous bits. So, children may be taken up to the summit by this trail, regardless of whether one wishes to get rid of them. I descended via the northern side (to road TF-655), which is a shorter trail, but steeper and slippier, and probably unsuitable for less agile people. Note that this volcano—dormant, by the way, so don’t bring your cigars, hoping to get a light—does not have a caldera, so there is no spectacular walk around the rim of the crater. (Contrast with Montana Blanca, on Lanzarote.) What you do get is wonderful views from the summit across the countryside and sea. Also, it is practically deserted, thanks to Google Maps overlooking it; apart from the odd local resident and canny tourist, you should have the mountain to yourself (whether or not you need a whole mountain...
Read moreIf you've never been walking abroad before you may feel sceptical about it, but rest assured, this area is a must-visit. It is an official nature reserve area. A fairly easy walk depending on your ability, the heat does prove added challenge. Bring plenty of water! For an interesting but precarious return, follow a small beaten down track after the second set of towers. Eventually this takes you to the bottom of the valley, with a very short scramble back up to the path you started on. This return is not at all required, but I would recommend to other avid hikers. For either route ensure you have...
Read moreI love exploring the Canary Islands. The terrain is unforgiving but impressive. I stumbled across this route via an unofficial path from the Green Padel near the slip road at the top of Los Chrisitianos. It was a hairy ascent due to being barely a path at times, but worthwhile once I reached the top. As others have said, bring at least 2 litres of water. I didn't have walking shoes, only trainers, which didn't help. Not quite the volcanoes of Fuerteventura but an impressive view...
