Ermita de San Ambrosio — Attraction in Barbate

Totally decrepit. Main use of the ermita seems to be nowadays for dumping of trash and squatting, disposed mattresses and graffiti pointing to the latter. For vulnerable groups like single women the site represents a security risk. Visits are not recommended. Apart from all that the ermita is heavily overgrown by thorny weeds and gum trees. Complete disaster and an indictment of the responsible authorities, presumably the diocese of Cadiz. This is an important historical site that could be made into a nice picnic spot or so with minimal investment - but...

This is a piece of history with the original church built by the Visigoths. Unfortunately it has been allowed to go to ruin and is overgrown with weeds. We were talking to an old local gentleman a few years ago, and he told us that the Catholic diocese of Cadiz were given money by the government to renovate the site, but in typical fashion the money...

Interesantes restos de la Ermita que da nombre al arroyo próximo y elementos del entorno, situada en el Pinar de la Breña en Vejer. De orígenes dispares según diversos estudios, restos romanos, construcción visigoda del año 644 y con aditamentos mudéjares posteriores. Actualmente se observan apeos y cimbras de una reciente restauración, aunque el vandalismo y el abandono campan a sus anchas. Se observan no obstantes la nave central rectangular, arcos fajones una pequeña capilla lateral abovedada y otros vestigios de su antiguo esplendor. Un precioso escudo eclesiástico corona un dintel de acceso al templo. Esperemos tiempos mejores para su recuperación. El acceso es fácil en coche , pero algo escondido. Merece la pena no Obstante. De destacar la existencia de una colonia de IBIS Eremita, una especie de aves de origen africano en especial peligro de extinción. Solo visibles en España en Vejer, provenientes de Marruecos y...
