The first chamber was discovered by accident in 1994 when they were building the lagartario building (lizard centre) while the second one with the collapsed roof was already known for centuries. The galleries to the two chambers are artificial. You can not actually visit the volcanic tubes as they were deemed unsafe for public visits. You still have to wear a helmet to enter the artificial galleries which feels a bit exaggerated.
