A short hike of around 1.6Km (3.2Km there'n'back) to visit the lower rim of the caldera via a myriad Geria (a shallow pit surrounded by a semi-circular volcanic stone wall designed to protect and grow grape vines).
I believe that La Corona is Lanzarote's tallest volcano. However, a high start-point means only around 100m of height gain to the rim. .
Best started around an hour before sunset or shortly after sunrise. Parking near the start is possible but space is very limited, so be prepared to park considerately and walk to the start of the footpath.
Stay alert throughout to avoid a slip or trip; the terrain is very sharp and abrasive and loose. Sandals, flip-flops and tennis shoes are not appropriate. Take at least 500ml of drink each to stay hydrated.
Circumnavigation of the caldera is prohibited. There are signs of footfall down into the caldera but this is not a recognised footpath and not a recommended hike so as to preserve the site.
Alternative routes from the road South of the nearby village to the rim can be found which provide more of a workout and passes by caves formed from small collapsed lava tubes.
Enjoy the rugged, largely unspoilt...
Read moreA great way to sirens couple of hours within the nature and hiking to a historic volcano crater that erupted hundreds of years ago. You can find off street parking (few spaces only) or at the nearby church couple of mins walking. The trail is initially plain and volcanic pebbles, transferring to rocky and muddy after a km. Then it's moderate steep up to the crater. The whole trail to and fro to the faster should take about hour and half leisurely trekking and is about 6km. The views from the top of amazing, both of the crater as well as of the valleys, the wine plantation and the ocean far away. Try to do it on a sunny, dry day as it can be...
Read moreOne of our favorite things we did on the island. We didn’t see a single tourist on the hike. Park at the church and it takes about 30 minutes of easy hiking. The path is pretty clear, just go toward the peak. You can hike to the edge and it’s worth it. We continued and braved the hike to the center of the crater ... it’s a bit difficult but worth it. Found a lizard...
