Cueva ermita de San Bernabé — Attraction in Merindad de Sotoscueva

Before going here, check the opening hours! Basically, during the holiday season, they are closed between 13:30 and 16:30. A three hour siesta! Secondly, all signs, maps and info panels are in spanish only. It is not clear weather to follow "Bernabé" or "Ojo" and the maps do not all show a "you are here" mark.

Nevertheless, we found it, although closed, and it is a beautifull place. We planned to do the short tour through caves and chapel, but enjoyed the outside instead.

Worth a visit? Yes, but check the opening hours. Worth a detour? I guess so, this cannot be on your route anywhere :-) Worth a trip? I would think so, especially if you do the tour through the caves.

There is also, if we understood correctly, a river that runs into the mountain(?) And another cave (Palomera) nearby and there are many trails between all these places. But only in spanish.

For the owner, that often replies to other reviews: please consider adding a second language to your signs. There is much info available, but only in spanish. Also, the maps on the parking spaces only show names of all the caves (or towns, or trails, or?) in this system, but without pictures. A legenda would be helpfull, also to determine which other places one would like to visit.

Closed or not: the trip to this place leads through a very impressive landscape with huge mountain ridges. The scenery changes after every corner. The views are great. It makes the trip very...

La ermita de San Bernabé está situada en la entrada principal del Complejo kárstico de Ojo Guareña y es parte de las cuevas. Situada en el municipio de Cueva de Sotoscueva.

Se desconoce la fecha de su construcción, unos la sitúan entre los siglos VIII-IX, pero también se cree que es del siglo XIII. Comenzó estando dedicada a San Tirso. En el siglo XVIII reúne las dos advocaciones. Las reformas de acondicionamiento comienzan a mediados del siglo XVII. Las bóvedas poseen pinturas, algunas deterioradas por las filtraciones del agua de las corrientes de la gran cueva cuenta. Las pinturas murales en la bóveda natural de los martirios son de San Tirso y San Bernabé que están datados entre los siglos XVIII y XIX. En el altar de encuentra una talla de San Tirso del siglo XIII. También hay frescos y un retablo. La ermita tiene sillar al exterior y es de nave única.

Junto a la ermita se encuentra la Sala del ayuntamiento que era utilizada como lugar de sesiones hasta 1924, año en que se trasladó a Cornejo.

Las Cuevas de Ojo Guareña, con sus más de 100 km. de galerías subterráneas forman el complejo kárstico más grande de España y uno de los mayores de Europa.

Ermita de San Bernabe is very short and doesn’t involve much of a cave. It’s just one corridor and the “church” bit. Also - it was very confusing to get there. It looks like nothing is there - so just follow the gps and park at the top. The entrance to both - bernabe and Palomera are at the same place - don’t queue for the wrong one as you might miss your time slot.
