La Fortaleza - Centro de Interpretación — Attraction in Santa Lucía de Tirajana

This is a lovely little museum packed with information about and finds from the pre-hispanic fortress of La Fortaleza, providing fascinating information in movies and storyboards of the native Canarians who lived there. The museum has a small gift shop and, more importantly, knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic staff. A few hundred metres (an easy walk, even in the heat) along the road is the site of La Fortaleza itself: A massive razor backed monolith of rock, peppered with caves used for habitation and burials. One dramatic cave pierces right through the mountain. At the foot of Fortaleza is a partially excavated pre-Hispanic village where the thick walls and foundations of the houses can clearly be seen. We stopped here just to see what it was like, and it turned out to be one of the hidden gems of the holiday. The centre itself was very informative and the staff couldn't do enough for us. They even came to get us when they were staying the English version of the video. The exhibits eye clearly presented and full of good, engaging, detail.

We then drove on to Fortaleza itself. This is a sight not to be missed. We climbed up to see the views, the caves and even a cave painting. We will check it's authenticity when we go back though. Fortaleza must have been a difficult life when it was inhabited, and getting change to see some of the living spaces first hand brought this home. Especially in 35°c heat.

El Museo-Centro de Interpretación La Fortaleza se encuentra muy cercano al Yacimiento Arqueológico de La Fortaleza (más conocida como La Fortaleza de Ansite), del cual deriva su nombre y funciones. Se divide en tres salas claramente diferenciadas, la audiovisual, la museística con piezas propias del yacimiento y la de reconstrucción donde se hayan recreaciones de algunas partes del yacimiento. Cuentan con baño, una pequeña zona para enseñanza a centros educativos y una tienda con multitud de libros y bisutería relacionado con la temática aborigen. En la zona superior posee una reconstrucción de una vivienda típica aborigen de excelente factura además de especies vegetales propias del archipiélago con su nombre científico además de reproducciones de petroglifos encontrados en el yacimiento. El precio es de 4€ por persona. Hay un amplio aparcamiento por lo que no es problema acudir en coche salvo porque es un poco sinuoso el camino desde dondequiera que se pretenda llegar. Para llegar en transporte público, habría que descender desde la parada de Santa Lucía de Tirajana (casco) a pie entre dos y tres Km. Respecto al yacimiento arqueológico en sí, la entrada es gratuita, está vallado pero se abre cada mañana y se puede acceder sin mayores problemas al extinto poblado, cuevas y a la cima de Fortaleza Grande; el camino hasta Titana puede tomar una hora ida y vuelta desde el comienzo del yacimiento. Si se desea una excursión guiada, cada cierto tiempo se ofrecen, incluyendo tanto al Centro de Interpretación como al yacimiento (para esta opción habrá que realizar reservación). El yacimiento forma parte del poblamiento aborigen más amplio de la Caldera de Tirajana, el cual aún no es conocido en su totalidad; consta de graneros, cuevas habitacionales, poblado, cuevas de enterramiento y en la zona superior del roque, una zona de cultos y rituales. Su investigación ha aportado mucho al conocimiento de los nativos canarios a nivel insular y de archipiélago lo cual le ha valido para aparecer en diferentes documentales, prensa y libros a nivel insular y nacional. Definitivamente un enclave importante si se visita Gran Canaria y se desea conocer más sobre su pasado...
