This temple was originally built by the Vishwakarma, on the directions of Lord Parshurama. It was destroyed two times, once because of a fire and another time because of the attack of Tipu Sultan. The attack of Tipu Sultan resulted in breaking of idol that stood 6 feet tall, but still the idol wasn't destroyed. The temple was rebuilt in 968 AD on the directions and the measurement provided by the Shilpis with the help of Deshams. The current version is said to be a miniature version of what was earlier established. There is a 6 feet tall idol standing in a compound wall that is 12 feet tall. This wall is said to be a rare temple architectural piece of Kara.
IMPORTANCE/SIGNIFICANCE
As one of the most important Maha Subramanya temple in South India, Payyanur Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, stands as the Land of the Lord Subramanya. There are other deities who are worshipped apart from the main deity Lord Subramanya, like Lord Ganpati, Bhootathar, Kanya Bhagwati, Vairajathan and many others. People who are Kshatriya aren't allowed inside the temple. Also the monks who wear saffron clothes, people who are considered to be involved in Black Magic and the female Brahmins aren't allowed in the neelambalam.
FACTS/MYTHOLOGY
Lord Subramanya also known as Skanda, Subramanya, etc., and is said to be the Commander-in-chief of the army of Devas and is supposed to be the Hindu God of war. Mahabharata,is the first place where the details are being specified about Lord Subramanaya There are several stories that are supposed to be true. In one of them, he is supposed to be so of Agni and Svaha. In Ganpati Khandam, Brahma Vaivarta Puran he is the elder son and Lord ganesha being the younger one of Lord Shiv and Parvti whereas, on the contrary, in South India he is supposed to be the younger of the two.
FESTIVALS/EVENTS/GATHERINGS
There are five poojas and three shivellis that are conducted each day. Triputhari, the harvest festival is celebrated with great zeal and fervor over here, where the deities are offered the newly harvest rice, cooked. The major festival of this temple is, Aradhana Mahotsavam. This is continued for fourteen days, starting from the first day of the Vrishchikam to the fourteenth of the same month of the Malyalam era. This festival is celebrated in the whole of the Payyanur. The main ceremony of the festival is tidampu ezhunnelathu along with the other formalities. The fourteen day ceremony is fully packed with lots of cultural events and sacred rituals.

Payyannur Subramanya temple is dedicated to Subramanya also called as Payyannur Perumal.
The two storeyed sanctum is in the shape of Gajaprishtam [back of an elephant].
This temple has a 6-ft tall idol of Subramanya with a Vel.

കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയുടെ വടക്കേ അറ്റത്ത് പയ്യന്നൂർ നഗരത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പയ്യന്നൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രം. പയ്യന്നൂർ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഒത്ത നടുക്ക് പെരുമ്പപ്പുഴയുടെ തീരത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അത്യുഗ്രമൂർത്തിയായ "സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമിയാണ്" പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ദേവസേനാധിപതി സങ്കല്പത്തിൽ താരകാസുരവധത്തിന് ശേഷമുള്ള ഭാവമാണിത്. "പയ്യന്നൂർ പെരുമാൾ" എന്ന പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ മുരുകന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ കേരളത്തിലെ പഴനി ആയാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.കൂടാതെ ധാരാളം ഉപദേവതകളുമുണ്ട്. ഏറെ ചരിത്രപ്രാധാന്യമുളള ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പയ്യന്നൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രം.നന്പൂതിരിമാരുടെ ഗ്രാമക്ഷേത്രമാണ്.മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ട് നന്പൂതിരിഗ്രാമങ്ങളില് വടക്കേ അററത്തെ ആദ്യത്തെ നന്പൂതിരി ഗ്രാമമാണ് പയ്യന്നൂർ. ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ പതിനാറ് ഇല്ലക്കാരാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ഊരാളര്. പരശുരാമനാല് പ്രതിഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. പരശുരാമശാസനകള് പാലിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രവുമാണ്.ക്ഷത്രിയര്ക്ക് പ്രവേശനമില്ല.രാജകീയ അടയാളങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും തന്നെ പാടില്ല.ഉല്സവത്തിന് ആന എഴുന്നളളിപ്പ് പാടില്ല.സദ്യക്ക് പപ്പടം പാടില്ല ഇങ്ങനെ. ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രധാന ഊരാളകുടുംബമായ താഴക്കാട്ട് മന വക പണിയിപ്പിച്ചതാണ്.മുഴുവൻ സ്വർണ്ണമയമായിരുന്ന പഴയ ക്ഷേത്രം ടിപ്പു കൊളളയടിച്ചു എന്നാണ് കേട്ടു കേളവി.
പരശുരാമനാണ് പയ്യന്നൂർ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയത്. ബ്രഹ്മാണ്ഡ പരാണത്തിൽ ഗർഗ്ഗമുനി വനവാസക്കാലത്ത് പാണ്ഡവരോട് കേരളത്തെ പറ്റി പറയുമ്പോൾ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെയും പയ്യന്നൂരിനെയും കുറിച്ച് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
പയ്യന്നൂരിന്റെ ചരിത്രവുമായി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഏറെ ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു കിടക്കുന്നു. പയ്യന്റെ ഊര് എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിലാണ് നഗരത്തിനു ഈ പേരു വന്നത്. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ പയ്യൻ എന്നും വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്
ക്ഷേത്രം രണ്ട് പ്രാവശ്യം നശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്, ഒരിക്കൽ അഗ്നി ബാധ മൂലവും മറ്റൊരിക്കൽ ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിലും. കൊല്ലവർഷം 964 -ൽ നടന്ന ടിപ്പുവിന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിന് ശേഷം, 988 -ൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പുനർ നിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും, 1002 -ൽ ബിംബ പ്രതിഷ്‌ഠയും ബ്രഹ്മ കലശവും നടക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ആനിടിൽ രാമൻ എഴുത്തച്ഛൻ രചിച്ച കലശപ്പാട്ടിൽ ഈ അമ്പലത്തിന്റെ ശിലാപരിഗ്രഹം മുതൽ ബിംബ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ വരെ വർണ്ണിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.[2]
പന്ത്രണ്ടടി ഉയരമുള്ള ചുറ്റുമതിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്, ചുറ്റുമതിലിനകതായി മൂന്നേറോളം വിസ്തൃതിയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. രണ്ടുനിലകളുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിൽ ഗജപൃഷ്ഠ മാതൃകയിലാണ് നിർമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രധാനമൂർത്തിയായ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ താരകാസുരനെ നിഗ്രഹിച്ചശേഷമുള്ള ഭാവത്തിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായി കുടിയിരുത്തപ്പെട്ടിരിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ആറടി ഉയരമുണ്ട് ഈ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന്. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ കൂടാതെ ഗണപതി, ഭൂതത്താർ, ഭഗവതി, ശാസ്താവ്, പരശുരാമൻ എന്നി ദേവതകളെയും ഇവിടെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രസമീപത്തുതന്നെ ഒരു സർപ്പക്കാവുമുണ്ട്[3].നാലമ്പലത്തിനു മുമ്പിൽ കൊടിമരത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് കന്യാഭഗവതി കുടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ മറ്റ് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഇത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്. മറ്റോരു പ്രത്യേകത ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നിർമ്മിതിയിൽ കരിങ്കല്ല് വളരെ കുറച്ച് മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളു എന്നതാണ്. ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് ലഭ്യമായ ഉറപ്പുള്ള വെട്ടുകല്ലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നിർമ്മിതിയിൽ പ്രധാനം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു പുറത്ത് മുൻ വശത്തായി വിശാലമായ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളം ഉണ്ട്. വെട്ടുകല്ലിൽ പടുത്ത് ഈ കുളം ഇതരദേശക്കാർക്ക് ഒരു ദൃശ്യം തന്നെ ആണ്.
കാവിവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ച സന്യാസിമാർക്കും ഉപനയനമുള്ള ക്ഷത്രിയർക്കും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനകത്ത് പ്രവേശനമില്ല. ഇവിടെ കൊടിമരമോ കൊടിയേറ്റമോ ഇല്ല എന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രാങ്ങനതിലുള്ള ഇലഞ്ഞി മരം എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും പൂക്കാരുന്റെങ്കിലും ഒരിക്കലും കായ്ക്കാറില്ല.
