Ranmasu Uyana is the Royal Garden of the era gone by. Anuradhapura Kingdom was one of the pinnacles of technological marvels in Sri Lanka and this Garden bears witness for it. It consists of bathing ponds with water supplied to it from the nearby Thisa weva (tank) through unimaginable techniques. The Garden also consists of the “Star gate” which historians are unsure of the purpose. It is said to span for approximately 40 acres and is rich in garden architecture and landscaping. The various ponds are believed to be used for bathing of the royal family and servants, and the remains of small buildings are thought of to be used by them. According to legend it is believed that Son of King Dutugemunu, Prince Saliya met his beau of great beauty, Asokamala in this garden, for whom he abdicated the throne. The word “Ran masu” means Goldfish. The Star Gate “map” is said to be encircled by fish. The Garden is said to have first constructed in the time of King Tissa in the 3rd Century BC. But the “pleasure pavilions” and other fixtures apparently date from the 8th to 9th Centuries AD.

Ranmasu uyana is situated little away from the Isurumuniya temple car park. I went there with a friend of mine in the late afternoon. This ancient water park used by the kings in the Anuradhapura Kingdom is known to be the place where prince Saliya met his love Ashokamala. Entire park is built by carved stone blocks which are positioned precisely. In rear side of the first pond on a rock wall you could see bunch of elephants playing with water which is an amazing stone carving. In the back side of one of the huge bolders you could see the famous star gate. There are numerous theories explaining this. The park is kept very nicely by the authorities. You could find newly built sanitation facility in the entrance of the park. If you go there in the late afternoon you'll be treated with a beautiful sunset over the Tissa tank which is right next to the park.

Ranmasu Uyana, also known as the Royal Park, is a garden complex which is situated in Anuradhapura. It is located in close proximity to the Isurumuni Viharaya and Tissa Wewa. The initial gardens were built during the reign of King Tissa in 3rd century BC. More pleasure related features were added to the garden later during the 8th and 9th centuries. Historically famed loving couple Saliya and Asokamala are believed to have met at Ranmasu Uyana. The archaeologically popular site “Start Gate”, which is believed to indicate communication between humans and extra-terrestrial beings, is located in this garden. If you are getting directions from Google maps, remember that it will show a wrong road. You can go to the Isurumuniya car park and walk towards your right side to find the entrance. The entrance is near the Isurumuniya public washrooms.
