Including the Twin ponds itself, the whole sourrounding contains ruins of a huge monastery, which had the acommadation facilities for 5000+ Buddhist monks, it says. The Twin ponds was there to provide bathing facilities to all the monks who reside in that monastery. There are several entrances to the Twin ponds. The 'Pun kalasas' (Pots of plenty)are established there as symbols of prosperity or welcoming charms. Its truely amazing to see how well plained methodology is there to fill the ponds. Both the ponds are inter connected to each other from their inner structure & when the further away pond with 5 snake heads is filled with filtered water, it automatically starts filling of the 1st pond. The entire amount of water necessary, has been taken from the 'Ath pokuna' (Tusker pond) which is situated 2kms away from the Twin ponds. The Ath pokuna is considered as the largest of its kind. කුට්ටම් පොකුණ කුට්ටම යනු යුගලයයි. කුට්ටම් පොකුණ ද පොකුණු දෙකකින් සමන්විත වූවකි. ඒ නිසාම එම නාමය ලද බව සිතිය හැකිය. අභයගිරි විහාරික භික්ෂූන්ගේ ප්රයෝජනය උදෙසා තැනුවේ යයි විශ්වාස කෙරෙන කුට්ටම් පොකුණෙහි පොකුණු දෙක එකම අවස්ථාවක ඉදිකළේ යැයි පිළිගත නොහැකිය. වම්පස පොකුණෙහි ශෛලමය පියගැට 20ක් වන අතර දකුණුපස පොකුණෙහි ඇත්තේ පියගැට 18 කි. වම්පස පොකුණ අඩි 91 ක් දික්වන අතර දකුණුපස පොකුණ අඩි 132 ක් දිගය. ඒවා පිළිවෙලින් අඩි 14ක් හා 17ක් පළලය. පොකුණු දෙක අතර ඇති පරතරය අඩි 9කි. ඒවා සම්බන්ධ වන නළයක් ඇති අතර පළමුව ජල සැපයුම ලබා ගන්නා වම්පස පොකුණෙන් ඉහත කී නළය තුළින් දකුණු පොකුණට ජලය සැපයේ. වම්පස පොකුණෙහි පතුළෙහි ඇති තැනකින් දෙකෙහිම ජලය ආපසු පිටවී යාමට කටයුතු යොදා ඇත. පොකුණු දෙකෙහිම ඉතා විශිෂ්ට ගණයේ පස් පෙන නාග රූප නෙලා තිබීම ද විශේෂයකි. ශ්රී ලංකාවේ හමුවී ඇති පැරණි පොකුණුවලින් ඉතාම සුන්දර නිර්මාණය කුට්ටම් පොකුණ යි. පිහිටි පොළොවට වඩා පහතින් පිහිටි බිමක තනන ලද දිග හතරැස් පොකුනු දෙකක් වෙයි. එයින් එක් පොකුණක අනිකට වඩා කුඩාය. කුඩා පොකුණ අනිකට වඩා පැරණි ලක්ෂණ වලින් යුක්තය. එයින් අනාවරණය වන්නේ පොකුණු දෙකම එක්වර සැළසුම් කරවා නැති බවයි. එහි පොකුණට පිටින් ජල පෙරණයක් ද වෙයි. මේ පොකුණේම ජලය පිට කරන මාර්ගයක් ද වේ. ඊට අමතරව අනෙක් පොකුණට ජලය සපයන මාර්ගයක් ද එහි වෙයි. කුඩා පොකුණේ උතුරු පැත්තේ ඇති නාග කැටයම් ඉතා දක්ෂ ලෙස නිර්මාණය කරන ලද්දකි. ශ්රී ලංකාවේ වැව් හා පොකුනුවල නාග රූප කැටයම් තබා ඇත්තේ නාගයා ජලයට සම්බන්ධ නිසා විය යුතුය. ජලය නොකඩවා ලබා දිමේ හැකියාව මේ නාගයාට තිබෙන බව එකල මිනිසුන් විශ්වාස කළ බව එයින් අනාවරණය වෙයි. කුට්ටම් පොකුණේ පුන් කලස් වර්ග දෙකකි. කුඩා පොකුණේ පුන්කලස්වල හැඩයට වඩා ලොකු පොකුණේ පුන්කලස්වල හැඩය වෙනස්ය. පොකුණු දෙක යුග දෙකකදී කරන ද බව එයින් ද ඔප්පු වේ. කලාත්මක අතින් කුඩා පොකුණේ පුන් කලස් වඩාත් කැපී පෙනේ. ඒවා අමරාවතී පුන්කලස්වලට නෑකම් කියයි. අභයගිරි විහාරයේ සෑම සංඝාරාමයකම පාහේ පොකුනු තිබේ. ඒවාට ජලය සැපයු ජල මාර්ග ද භුමියෙහි වැළලී තිබේ. දහස් ගණනක් භික්ෂුන් වාසය කළ සංඝාරාමයක සැළකිය යුතු ගිහි සේවක පිරිසක් ද සිටින්නට ඇත. ඒ සියළු දෙනාටම අවශ්ය ජලය මේ පොකුනු වලින් පලින් පල දක්නට ඇති ළිං වළින් ලබා ගන්නා ලදී. පොකුණුවලින් තවත් සේවයක් විය. පරිසරය තුළ ඇති උෂ්ණත්වය අඩුකිරීමට ද ඒවා උපකාරී විය. පරිසරයේ අලංකාරයට ද එයින් මෙහෙයක් ඉටුවිය අන්තර් ජාලය ඇසුරිනි.
