Simply wonderful! Words can't describe how lovely the day trip we took from Zurich to Mount Rigi was, but I will try.
We took a train to Lucern, and then the "Majestic Round Trip". This was a boat across Lake Lucern (stunning views) and then an 1871 cogwheel train up the mountain (even more stunning views).
We got off the cogwheel train at the Rigi Kaltbad/First stop so we could visit the Känzeli viewing platform; this was a short walk up some paths. And I am so glad we did because the views from this platform were jaw droppingly beautiful. Most of the crowds had headed straight to the top so there was only about 10 people on the platform. It was just so peaceful, tranquil and the five minutes when all 10 people were silent was amazing.
We then headed back to the Kaltbad/First stop and bought some beer from the small shop (about £5 per beer which was pretty good value considering). We sat outside in glorious sunshine and this 30 minutes while waiting for the next train was also wonderful.
We then took the train up to Rigi Kulm, the top of the mountain. There was lots of snow at the summit and the weather was colder. But the views were still stunning (although not quite as stunning as they were on the viewing platform).
Again we had a reasonably priced beer at the summit, this time at the posh bar with a table overlooking the stunning mountain view.
We then took the cogwheel train back down to Arth-Goldau where we caught a train back to Zurich.
One of the best trips I've ever taken and I can't recommend this...

Swiss engineers have designed very good cogwheel trains and cable cars at so many places in the mountains. Without these transportation systems,Switzerland cannot attract so many tourists.
Rigi is a small place (mountain top). From here, you can see Lucerne and Zug Lakes. It is also between two beautiful mountain ranges. You can easily spend 2or 3 hours enjoying the views. From Rigi Kulm station, a 15 minute walk leads to a peak where telecommunications tower is located.
On one side there is a steep slope of the mountain. That serves a good launching spot for paragliding. We had the opportunity to watch how the paraglider struggles waiting for a favourable wind and launch spot.
There is a huge restaurant to cater the hungry people near the railway station. There are seating arrangements here and there. For seniors they have provided alternative routes with less gradient.
Rigi has totally four different routes. They are cog-wheel trains, cable cars, normal walkers path and tedious trekking routes. Walkers and trekking routes meet train stations at many places providing more options for the tourists to explore.
Cog-wheel trains run from Goldau to Rigi Kulm. Whereas, Cable cars run from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm. So, if one wants to enjoy both the journey, planning has to be done...
