The Triftbrücke is a stunning suspension bridge located in the Swiss Alps, near the Trift Glacier. Constructed to replace an earlier bridge damaged by the retreat of the glacier, it stretches 170 meters (560 feet) across and spans the turquoise waters of the Triftsee, a glacial lake. The bridge provides access to the Trift Hut and serves as a vital crossing point for hikers and mountaineers.
Visitors can reach the bridge through a challenging hike or by taking a cable car partway. The trail from the cable car station is approximately 3 kilometers long, with an ascent of about 350 meters. The hike can take between 55 minutes to 2.5 hours, depending on fitness levels and the number of stops for photography. For those preferring a full hike, the trails labeled T2 and T3 are available from the parking area. The cable car ride costs 13 CHF for one way and reduces the hike to about 1.5 kilometers.
The ascent is steep and recommended for experienced hikers, as it includes uneven terrain, large steps, and occasional crossings of small waterfalls. During rain or mist, the views become even more atmospheric, with clouds clinging to the mountains, enhancing the alpine scenery. Along the way, hikers may encounter sheep grazing nearby, adding to the charm of the trail.
At the top, the Triftbrücke offers an unforgettable experience. The combination of the bridge, the glacial lake, and the remnants of the Trift Glacier creates a breathtaking panorama. While crossing, visitors can feel the bridge's sway, providing a real-world demonstration of wave interference and the dynamic forces at play.
The Triftbrücke remains a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts, offering one of the most remarkable views in...
Read moreNote: as of the writing of this review, hiking from the Triftbahn lower parking lot is not really an option. I misunderstood other reviewers saying you could walk from there to the bridge in around 1.5hrs. Well, we walked from the lower parking lot up a narrow resident road, found a reasonably well marked hiking trail, and started our ascent. 1.5 hours, a stream crossing, two scary traverses (sheer drop!) later, we came to a stream where rocks must be crossed. This would absolutely not be safe without real climbing equipment so we turned around. This was almost to the upper Triftbahn station and took 1.5-1.75 hrs.
Plus: the hiking trail is good quality (minus the scare 2-3 parts, just don’t look over the edge), the trail is well marked with yellow signs and as well white-red-white key painted on rocks. We got to wave at the men testing the gondola (it opens the day after we leave, of course). They looked at us like we were crazy 🤣
I’m sure the hike up from the actual bahn station is just fine / safe. The lower part we did is like some Colorado 14ers in difficulty...
Read moreNice and challenging hike to see the Trift suspension bridge and Trift glacier. The hike starts at the top of the Triftbahn cable car station and is 3.3km to the bridge. The path is a well-trodden path with rocky sections with rock steps that you have to climb up. Good hiking shoes and poles are recommended. The hike is mostly uphill and takes 1h30 min to get to the bridge at a moderate pace. It took me 1h10 min to walk the 3.3km back (downhill) to the cable car. I booked my tickets for the cable car online and had to book a time to go up and to descend. Make sure you leave enough time to hike back from the bridge to the cable car! I was only able to book cable car times that left me 3h at the top - so I only spent about 15 min at the bridge and glacier. I would suggest leaving at least 4 hours at the top to have a more leisurely visit. The suspension bridge is about 100m across the gorge and is quite solid. You can walk across and spend time on the other side before heading back. Great view of the Trift Glacier from the bridge. Definitely...
