As a travel blogger and avid road trip enthusiast, Splügen Pass is one of those hidden gems that exceeded all my expectations. Nestled between Switzerland and Italy, this historic mountain pass offers an exhilarating drive through some of the most stunning Alpine scenery I’ve ever encountered.
The road itself is a marvel—winding hairpin turns, steep climbs, and dramatic drops make for an exciting adventure. But what truly makes this pass special is the ever-changing landscape. One moment you’re surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, and the next, you’re driving through lush valleys dotted with charming villages. Each turn reveals a new, picture-perfect vista that makes you want to stop and take it all in.
The road conditions are well-maintained, but be prepared for narrow stretches and sharp bends. This isn’t just a drive—it’s an experience, one that’s both thrilling and serene. If you’re traveling in the winter, ensure your vehicle is equipped for snowy conditions. In the summer, the pass is a paradise for bikers and hikers alike.
Splügen Pass isn’t just a route from A to B; it’s a journey through the heart of the Alps that you’ll never forget. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just looking for a memorable day trip, this is one route that deserves to be on your bucket list. Highly recommend adding a stop at one of the local eateries in Splügen or Montespluga for a taste of authentic mountain cuisine.

Read moreI could only rate this Pass a few days after tackling it. My mum and I drove over the pass by Googles' recommendation. I've never before heard of it, and I'm from South Africa, where we drive on the right side of the road, not that that matters on the Splügen Pass 😅 I drove a citroen C4 for context.
Rating: 1 meltdown with tears I had to reverse twice on the turns as I couldn't make it 🤣 heart rate was a constant 130bpm, burned a lot calories. All in all, it was type 2 fun! (Type 1 fun: immediately enjoying what you're doing. Type 2 fun: takes a day to realise that it was fun. Type 3 fun: it can take sometimes years before coming to the conclusion. It was actually fun)
Recommendation: Use a Motorbike Use a bicycle (E-bike) Or a car that has a sharp turn radius 😅 Highly...
Read moreThe Splügen Pass (Italian: Passo dello Spluga; elevation 2,113 meters) is a stunning mountain pass in the Alps, connecting Switzerland’s Graubünden region with Italy’s Lombardy. Known for its dramatic switchbacks, rugged scenery, and historic importance, this pass offers breathtaking views of deep valleys, rocky cliffs, and alpine meadows. The road is narrow and winding, making it a favorite for driving and motorcycle enthusiasts, though it's closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. Nearby attractions include the Via Mala gorge and the charming village of Splügen. While less famous than Stelvio or Gotthard, Splügen Pass provides a thrilling, less crowded alternative with rich history as a former...
