Just got back from Zermatt. We had 5 days of beautiful weather and good (not excellent conditions). The first few hours of skiing were amazing. After that, though, lots of ice and somewhat dangerous, especially in the crowded and narrow areas. This is definitely not a place for beginners. The views are spectacular and can't be beat. However, my major complaints are the 3 1/2 hour train ride from Zurich, which inevitably involves a transfer at Visp. The transfer is pure insanity. People running, with luggage, skis, etc., pushing and shoving, hoping to get a seat on the transfer train. More than that though, is the lack of accessibility to the mountain itself. It involves a very crowded bus, SRO, or a longish walk to another entry point--all while carrying full gear. I have been to many mountains with shuttles, etc. but nothing at all like this. Each day we returned to the hotel exhausted, not from the skiing, but from the traveling to and from the mountain. This trip was definitely a bucket list but I doubt I will return because of the inconsistent conditions, travel time to Zermatt, and the mountain...
