Damascus' sword statue is one of the most famous landmarks in Damascus; it is located within the Umayyad Square and is considered one of the symbols of the city, the Syrian TV logo and the Damascus International Fair. The monument was erected in the early 1970s as a symbol of the traditional Damascene swords industry, with two colored glass panels. The design of the monument was overseen by Abdelkader Arnaout and Ihsan Entabi .

السيف الدمشقي لمن لا يعرفه: السيف الدمشقي هو السلاح السيف الشهير الذي كان يصنع في مدينة دمشق منذ آلاف السنين.. واشتهر السيف الدمشقي عبر التاريخ بجودة المعدن الذي يصنع منه هذا السيف، وبصلابته التي عرفت واشتهرت في التاريخ وقد سمي المعدن الذي تصنع منه (السيوف الدمشقية) بالمعدن الأسطوري نظرا لصلابته الكبيرة وملمسه الناعم وعرف بحدته ومتانة معدنه وجودة صناعته. والسيف الدمشقي رمز للبطولة عبر العصور وكان قادة الجيوش يطلبونه عن غيره من السيوف وكان له صناعيون مهرة في مدينة دمشق.. وكان الصناع الدمشقيون يقومون بصنع آلاف القطع من هذا السيف الذي كانت تزود به الجيوش في مختلف الفترات التاريخية، والغريب أن سر المعدن الذي يصنع منه سيف دمشق لم يتم اكتشافه برغم محاولات الأوربيين في العصور القديمة معرفة سر صلابة السيف الدمشقي، وقد حاول أشهر صناع السيوف في أوروبا أيام الحروب الصليبية في الشرق بعد أن واجه العرب الصليبين في سوريا والمشرق لاحظ قادة الجيوش الصليبية تميز هذا السيف وحدته وصلابته عن غيره من السيوف وأنه يصنع في مدينة دمشق فقط، بمعدن غريب فحاولوا معرفة المعدن الذي يصنع منه ولم يتمكن أمهر صناع السيوف في أوروبا من اكتشاف سر السيف الدمشقي فسمي المعدن الذي يصنع منه السيف الدمشقي بالمعدن الأسطوري...

This is a monument to engineering, the structure is NOT a sword, nor does it resemble a sword! it is actually a double rectangular hyperbola, has nothing to do with the Umayyads. It has a very impressive concrete structure which has no internal webs. The upper curves of the hyperbola cantilever inwards over the lower arch. Nice shape , artistic design .. It refers to the time of Umayyad Caliphate .. At that time the spread of the country extended from china in the east , spain from the west ,and the capital was Damascus .. The monument stands in heart of Damas , side of Umayyad square .. Nice view at night when more lights from inside and surrounding .. Nice to see the sword and background is Qasyion mountain .....
