The place is a pass leading further into the mountains, especially to areas famous for giant trees (like Simakusu). On sunny days, the pass offers moderate views (from the police station) of the Zhudong and Hsinshu areas, and very good views to the east (from the viewing platform) of the central mountain range. Due to the views and the altitude of 1450m, it is popular for tourists and quite a famous climb for cyclists. But there's not much to do as it's too cramped up the mountain and you won't find good parking, nor many shops...
