「明新書院」位於永昌國小內，是集集鎮每年祭孔的地方。於民國七十四年列為三級古蹟，建於清光緒8年是南投縣內四大書院之一，主祀文昌帝君等聖賢，當時名為書院其實是義學，由粵儒陳國安執教，到了日治時期時將書院土地撥交集集鎮的公立學校，以書院充作教室，相傳清光緒年以前，先民將主神文昌帝君、至聖先師神牌奉祀於集集鎮，在一次神明出巡的日子，當隊伍到了竹山鎮後埔仔，經過草潭時發現潭中有巨獸作怪，文昌帝君顯靈伏妖，之後先民為感念文昌帝君就倡議蓋廟，這就是「明新書院」的傳說故事。 「明新書院」為宮殿式建築，燕尾簷，磚牆、木柱、木門皆具特色，很值得遊客參訪，準備參加考試的學子更應該來給他加持一下。 "Mingxin College" is located in Yongchang Elementary School and is the place where Jiji Town worships holes every year.
