The Taiwan Coal Mine Museum is one of the place of interests in Shifen. You can get a taste of Shifen's history. A bit run-down and unmaintained, but it seems like a 'time travel' back-in-time. You find some interesting exhibitions, explanations illustrated by pictures about miners' life. It recalls and show respect for the miners who spent their hard life here. The most-loved part of the visit was the miner-train travel at the end of the visit. We really enjoyed it! The staff was so friendly and helpful. Maybe his english is not the best but he is fine to answer your any question. Also, there's an adorable doggie with him. It's worth to visit and pay the 200 TWD for the entrance fee. Maybe it helps to conservate this historic place for the next generation. Many people complaining about the high entrance fee. I was going to rather pay that fee than for the hand-painted 'tourist-attraction' lantern at the old...

An interesting museum that probably deserves a bit more love. Google maps indicates the parking entrance that is convenient if you have a car, but there is a small narrow gauge mine train starting not far from the entrance of the Shifen waterfall driving you to the museum, do not miss it. The museum itself is small but explains well the life of the miners, and the training tunnel is an interesting, but claustrophobic, experience. The staff was also really nice and helpful. Definitely...

If you interested to coal or some history of Taiwan, may come over. Only certain part is remaining open but not the coal mine tunnel itself due to safety measures. The lunch box here is very expensive with simple dishes only, not very worth to have your meal here. Just head to shifen old streets which is just a couples of minutes away by driving . Plenty of food choice there. Here also may experience the old train that used for mining in the old times .just about 15mins round...
