When visiting Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, viewing the sunrise is a must-do activity.
You have to purchase the train ticket that brings you from Alishan Station to Zhushan Station, a day in advance starting at 2 pm; you can't purchase it any earlier. You'd also have to check at the train station, after 4 pm, the estimated time of sunrise so that you know how early to come to the train station.
In the morning, by the time we arrived at the train station at 4:45 am, there was already a long line waiting to board the train. We eventually managed to squeeze into one of the cars, standing just next to the train door. This turned out to be a blessing, as we could arrive at the sunrise viewing platform before the crowd and secured a good viewing spot.
Your sunrise experience is affected by the weather; if it's cloudy or if it rains, you won't get to see the sunrise. We were glad that the sky was clear when we were there, which gave us a good view.
There are two places you could view the sunrise: you could view it here, which is just a short walk from the Zhushan Train Station, or you could take a long walk to the Ogasawara Mountain Watchtower (小笠原山觀景台 Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout). Our family chose to stay here.
The wait for sunrise was filled with anticipation. It was cold, and there was not much else to do. Fortunately, a guide (probably employed by the Forest Recreation Area) was giving a rather interesting commentary about the area, so that took our mind off the wait.
The sun rose slightly earlier than the estimated time provided at the train station. The view was spectacular. Most people were trying to capture the moment either on their cell phone or on camera.
We really enjoyed our time here!
The only downside was the cigarette smoke by inconsiderate smokers! The morning air was fresh until those cigarette smoke marred it! Perhaps the authority should make this place a...
Read moreThe sunrise train at Alishan offers an unforgettable experience, especially with stunning views of Jade Mountain. To make your trip smoother and more enjoyable, consider the following tips:
Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before the train's 4:20 AM departure to avoid overcrowding and ensure you have enough time to buy tickets and queue for seats. If you notice a large crowd the day before, book a bus ride at the train station for the same price as the train, guaranteeing a seat.
Vendors at the top sell hot tea and snacks, so you don’t need to worry about food. However, time is limited as the return train departs around 6 AM, giving you roughly an hour to enjoy the sunrise, which occurs around 5 to 5:30 AM. Alternatively, you can wait for the next train at 10 AM if you have more time.
After getting off the train, head to the right towards Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout. It's a 10-minute hike uphill but offers a far superior view compared to the one in front of the train station. There’s also a charming tea stop halfway through your journey to the lookout, which is worth a visit if time allows.
Overall, catching the sunrise at Alishan with Jade Mountain in the backdrop is a breathtaking and hopeful experience. The short hike and early wake-up call are well worth the stunning views and serene atmosphere. By following these tips, you can ensure a memorable and...
Read moreThis is THE spot to see the famous sunrise in Alisan. It was cold for the end of December, about 4 degrees C but well worth it. I can finally check that off my bucket list.
Make sure to purchase the train ticket the day before staring around 2pm. The precise sunrise time will announce around 430pm and the time of the first train, at the station or the hotels you're staying at. The train ride will take about 30 minutes. It will be packed even for a Tuesday. So check the first train time and be there an hour before for the first departure.
Our sunrise was off by 5 minutes later but still we got to see it with our own eyes. Pictures don't do justice, we never seen the sun that clear, bright, and vibrant, full of golden rays. Everyone was in awe.
If you have purchase the return ticket, then the train will take you back to the Alisan station, or you can slowly trek back, about an hour. There is another observation deck not far from this one so you have to choose which one you prefer to see. This is the most popular spot, right off the Zhusan station. The station also has some vendors selling hot drinks and snacks for you while waiting for the sun to come up.
Overall it was awesome, a must see, and nothing...
