You have to use your imagination a lot. Obviously, most of the area is basically a big pile of mud, but you can make out some structures and some of the buildings have been reconstructed. The views over the city are great. If you are feeling very cheap, you can dodge the ticket lady by walking directly up the hill (you can find the stairs too) if you are walking from town. This is also a big shortcut.

If you happen to visit Panjakent, Tajikistan, you can’t miss this. Nice walk in the morning. It was a little foggy and had rained so it was a bit muddy but it was nice. We had a tour guide so he explained everything. But perfectly fine if you want to wonder around.

As with most of Tadzjikistan's ruins, much is left to the imagination, as almost nothing remains from the mud brick structures. Some efforts have been made to unearth or rebuild a number of buildings, but far too little to consider a detour.

Though there are some restored ruins of 7th century in the form of halls and fortress towers here and there, nothing much impressive. The small room of the museum has some damaged clay pottery and painting copies of originals at Dushanbe with entry ticket of 30 Som as of Jun 6th. The spectacular landscape of surrounding mountains from here and the bird view of Panjakent is worth for staying a night in the...
