Mwenge Woodcraft Market in Dar es Salaam is a vibrant hub for authentic Tanzanian art and craftsmanship. Located near the busy Mwenge bus terminal, the market is a must-visit for anyone interested in local culture, offering a wide array of handmade items including wooden carvings, Maasai jewelry, paintings, and traditional textiles. The skill of the artisans is evident in the intricate designs and the variety of art on display, with each piece telling a story of Tanzanian heritage.

One of the highlights of the market is the abundance of ebony carvings, from small souvenirs to large, impressive sculptures. The prices are negotiable, and haggling is part of the experience, making it both engaging and rewarding for visitors looking for a good deal. The market is also a great place to observe artisans at work, giving a glimpse into the craft-making process.

While the market can be a bit overwhelming due to its size and the enthusiasm of sellers, it adds to the lively and authentic atmosphere. Overall, Mwenge Woodcraft Market offers a unique shopping experience where visitors can take home a piece of Tanzanian culture while supporting...

The Mwenge Wood Carver's Market is in Mwenge area of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is 8km northwest of Dar es Salaam City Centre. It is near the intersection of Bagamoyo Road and Sam Nujoma Road. Mwenge is known for the large Makonde community market where ebony sculptures, wood crafts  and other art items are sold. The market is a major tourist attraction of Dar es Salaam. Dresses, paintings, masks, and all other craft items special to Tanzania are made and sold here. Several shops have adjacent workshops where visitors can watch Makonde sculptors at work. Mwenge is one of the main daladala (share taxi) stations of Dar es Salaam. Daladalas ply from Mwenge to the Dar es Salaam central business district as well as all other destinations, throughout the day carrying tourists and locals. Very beautiful artwork at display and tourists throng into this market place to have a glimpse of the displayed items and for purchase. Visit this market and feel the beauty of Tanzanian...

I recently visited Mwenge Woodcarvers Market in Dar es Salaam and was blown away by the incredible craftsmanship on display. The market is home to some of the most talented woodcarvers in Tanzania, and their skill and creativity are truly impressive.

The variety of items available is impressive, from intricately carved sculptures to beautiful furniture and household items. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the materials used and the attention to detail in each piece.

The market is a must-visit for anyone interested in local art and culture, and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Dar es Salaam. The vendors are friendly and welcoming, and the prices are very reasonable given the level of artistry involved.

Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Mwenge Woodcarvers Market and will definitely be back in the future. Thank you to all the talented artists who make this market such a...

Mwenge Woodcarvers Market is for souvenir shopping and a place where you can witness woodcarvers sculpting behind some store. It can be an overwhelming experience, as all the shopkeepers are trying to attract your attention. It is essential to bargain a lot, as items may be worth a quarter of the price that you are quoted initially (especially if you are mzungu). Most stores sell the same souvenirs items, and paintings, so make sure you visit a few stores to get an idea of prices you are offered before making purchases. There is one store that we found was very different from the rest. The store is on the inner side of the courtyard with animal paintings on the outside and lots of masks and statues inside. The masks are formidable and the sculptures are vulgar but impressive from an arts perspective. The art is done by an older gentleman, who is the grandparent of the lady running the store.

This is a very nice place for tourists to buy souvenir to bring back home! There a plenty of options to choose from, wood carvings, paintings, fabrics, clothes, neckless, earrings, bracelets, lots of the local cultures crafts. Of course there is a LOT of offerings and everyone will invite you to enter their shop to see and offer the best prices. As you can expect, the prices will be high! The secret is to start bargaining of you want a cheaper price, some of us will not be used to this, but is quite accepted to do it. Example, one t-shirt, could be offered to you in 40,000 thz, it could be lowered down to 20,000 Thz. Feel free to explore and ask, compare a LOT among the shops! Enjoy!
