วัดโบราณขนาดใหญ่พอควร เป็นวัดเก่าแก่ที่สุดในเขตกรุงเทพฯและปริมณฑล เดิมชื่อว่าวัดหลวง ไม่แน่ชัดว่าใครสร้าง อาจเป็นกษัตริย์หรือผู้มีบรรดาศักดิ์ สร้างในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดีที่ 1 (พระเจ้าอู่ทอง) เชื่อว่าพระองค์ได้อพยพผู้คนหนีโรคระบาดมาประทับอยู่ที่บริเวณนี้ ก่อนที่จะกลับไปตั้งราชธานีที่กรุงศรีอยุธยา จนในปลายสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 สมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส เสด็จมาเห็นมีปรางค์องค์ใหญ่ สร้างอยู่คู่วัด จึงประทานชื่อใหม่ว่าวัดปรางค์หลวง ตั้งอยู่ริมคลองอ้อมนนท์ฝั่งตะวันตก สุดถนนปรางค์หลวง จากบางใหญ่มาทางถนนกาญจนาภิเษก (ตลิ่งชัน- สุพรรณบุรี) เลยวัดคงคาเลี้ยวซ้าย เข้าไปลึกพอควรจะเห็นประตูวัด ซ้ายมือมีลานจอดรถ เมื่อเข้าวัดขวามือจะเห็นพระอุโบสถหลังเก่าที่สร้างใหม่ในปี พ.ศ.2536 ทรงไทยประยุกต์ ไม่มีช่อฟ้าใบระกา หน้าบันเรียบ หันหน้าไปทิศเหนือ ด้านหน้าเปิดโล่ง ผนังเจาะช่องลมแคบๆ มีหลวงพ่ออู่ทองพระปางมารวิชัยสีดำเป็นพระประธาน มีพระอัครสาวกนั่ง 2 ข้าง ข้างหน้ามีองค์จำลองให้ปิดทอง ใบเสมาหินชนวนเรียบขนาดใหญ่แบบสมัยอยุธยาตอนต้นปักบนพื้น เหลืออยู่ 2 ใบที่ด้านหน้าตรงกลาง และด้านหน้ามุมซ้าย ด้านหลังเป็นพระปรางค์ประธาน ก่ออิฐสอดินยอดเจ็ดชั้นประดับลายปูนปั้น เรือนธาตุมีซุ้มจรนำ 4 ทิศ ประดิษฐานพระปางอุ้มบาตร ฐานย่อมุมไม้ยี่สิบ ไม่มีบันไดทางขึ้น สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างขึ้นพร้อมกับวัด แต่จากรูปแบบพระปรางค์คงมีการปฏิสังขรณ์ในสมัยอยุธยาตอนกลางถึงปลาย ปัจจุบันมีสภาพชำรุดมาก ปูนปั้นเหลือเพียงเล็กน้อย พระพุทธรูปเหลือแค่บางส่วน ปรางค์เอนเนื่องจากดินทรุด ฐานมองไม่เห็นสภาพเดิม ด้านหลังมีพระวิหารน้อย 2 หลังเรียงต่อเนื่องกัน เป็นอาคารก่ออิฐถือปูน ไม่มีช่อฟ้าใบระกาหางหงส์ หน้าบันเรียบหันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันตก หลังซ้ายมือมีรูปปั้นหมอชีวกโกมารภัจจ์ ถัดเข้าไปมีศาลไม้พี่จุกและพี่จันทร์ จากลานจอดรถจะเห็นพระอุโบสถหลังใหม่ เป็นแบบขนบเดิม มีช่อฟ้าใบระกาหางหงส์ หน้าบันมีพระปางห้ามญาติ หันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออกสู่คลอง เสาย่อมุมไม้สิบสอง หัวเสามีบัวแวง ประตูและหน้าต่างมีซุ้มหน้านาง มีพระปางมารวิชัยเป็นพระประธาน มีพระอัครสาวกยืน 2 ข้าง ข้างหลังมีภาพต้นพระศรีมหาโพธิ์ ระหว่างประตูหน้ามีรูปหล่อสมเด็จพระเจ้าปราสาททอง ระหว่างประตูหลังมีพระปางห้ามญาติ ใบเสมาอยู่บนซุ้มกลีบบัว 8 ทิศ บริเวณริมคลองมีพระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์รัชกาลที่ 5 อยู่ข้างศาลาท่าน้ำ ออกจากวัดเลี้ยวขวาเข้าไปไม่ไกลจะถึงวัดอัมพวัน นนทบุรี เมื่อเดือนก่อนผมได้มาไหว้พระ 9 วัดแถบบางขุนกอง วันนี้ผมมาไหว้พระแถบบางคูเวียงเริ่มจากวัดหูช้าง วัดละมุดใน วัดสิงห์ นนทบุรี วัดตะเคียน และวัดโบสถ์บน ก่อนเดินทะลุมาวัดปรางค์หลวง แล้วจะไปต่อวัดอัมพวัน...
