This one spot alone is worth the trip from Chiang Mai. Hidden gem full of carvings at temple-worthy master level. First thing one sees is this "art gallery" on the right side of road, then a path leading towards a big golden elephant diety sculpture - all lines with already amazingly detailed and beautiful woodcarvings - then a tunnel leading to even more jaw-dropping carvings. We were given a tour by the boss himself who happened to be there, and his knowledge and passion for this craft is evident. The quality of the woodwork is matched by their prices, but fear not, they come in all size and prices. At the end of the long tour there is a general shop with pretty affordable souvenirs. The small, colorful, life-like elephant carvings are made of different types of wood to give them the variety. Photography is not allowed inside where the really good stuff are. If you ever visit the woodcarving village of Baan Tawai, definitely find this place, Baan Tipmanee!

Baan Tipmanee teak carving museum/place is renowned for its fine wood carving, etching and probably most well respected place in Thailand for teak wood carving. The place is located at Baan Tawai village Hang Dong District which is around 30-40mins away commuting by car from Chiang Mai City/Town. The place is not only for sight seeing, but also offers education courses for children to adults whether its wood etching, carving, moulding and basic for tools use for all teak woods. The place does not allow guests to take photos inside. Please ask for K. Noi for your tour guide. She is extremely friendly and knowledgeable on all wooden sculpture and the process behind. She can speaks fluent Eng and Thai language ( and a little Mandarin). Incredible experience. Hidden Gem in Chiang Mai.

This lovely family-run shop is filled with beautiful teak wood carvings made with great skill and care. The owners are warm, kind-hearted people who genuinely want to help you find the perfect piece. Whether you’re looking for something small or a large statement piece, they patiently guide you and share the story behind each item. You can feel the love and tradition in their work. It’s more than a shop—it’s an experience worth visiting. I was looking for a Guanyin statue, and I found so many beautiful ones, but they were larger than I wanted. So I ended up buying a lovely little horse 🐎
