Big Buddha Pai (Wat Phra That Mae Yen) • Location: About 2 km outside Pai town, on a hill at Wat Phra That Mae Yen. • The Statue: A massive white Buddha seated in meditation, clearly visible from Pai town. • Stairs: Visitors climb around 353 steps to reach the statue, though you can also drive partway up. • View: Offers one of the best panoramic views of Pai Valley, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. • Atmosphere: Very peaceful, with fewer crowds compared to big temples in Chiang Mai. Monks often chant in the temple below. • Tips: • Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). • Best time to visit: early morning or evening (cool weather + stunning light). • Free entry, but donations are welcome.

It’s considered both a spiritual site and a tourist highlight, making it a must-visit if you’re...

Sacred place, this area should be respected. Would you wear a bathing suite to a church in Europe? Not sure why the tourists in Pai are some of the most disrespectful I’ve seen. Thailand is a modest culture especially around monks at a holy site. There are several signs saying please dress appropriately. Take away, think about another country and their culture. Pai locals have begged authorities to enforce a dress code, wrote letters, and feel their town is being overrun by BAD TOURISTS. As westerns and the youth of a new generation be mindful of a culture that is not yours. Wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders - its easy to pack in a day bag. If you’re too lazy to follow the rules, or just don’t...

We took motorbikes from central Pai to the Big Buddha and it was an easy 15 min drive. The Wat is free and it’s quite regal. The steps leading to the large Buddha is guarded by a pair of giant Guardian Singas - pretty cool. There is a small temple across from the base of the steps. There is also a nice view of Pai city. Once you climb the steps to the large Buddha you are greeted by a serene and peaceful terrace to reflect and enjoy the sweeping views while Buddha watches from above. A very nice stop while...

Top 8 activities in Pai, Thailand. The Big Buddha is worth the short drive and climb. It offers stunning views of Pai from the top. Make sure to have your knees and shoulders covered. I could spend an entire day at Mo Pang waterfall. There’s plenty of food & drink options, and places to lay out in the sun or shade. The Mueang Paeng Hot Springs are about a 45 min drive from town, but they’re secluded and free versus the ones closer to town. The drive out here is windy, but worth it for the views. Pai Canyon is a very unique landscape that takes about 2 hours to explore all the trails. Be extra careful to not fall off the 100 ft. cliffs. The sunsets from Pai are next level. My favorite spots are the Pai Canyon, 2Huts, and 10Rai. Every night, the streets come alive for the night market, offering some of the best street food in Thailand! I know it’s early but it’s hard to beat a sunrise from Yun Lai Viewpoint. Lastly, you must partake in a day of Tipsy Tubing. There were about 500 of us on the day I went. It’s a half day full of tubing, boozing & partying.
