My visit to Wat Don Wai Floating Market was an unforgettable experience, thanks to the Klook tour that included stops at this historic market as well as the stunning cafes I previously reviewed.
Located in Nakhon Pathom, about 30 kilometers west of Bangkok, the market is rich in history and offers a unique shopping and dining experience beside the Tha Chin River.
Despite the name, the market isn't on boats but is instead lined along the riverbank, providing a picturesque backdrop as you explore the various stalls.
The market is known for selling authentic local products at incredibly affordable prices, much cheaper than what you’d find in central Bangkok tourist areas.
From fresh fruits and delicious Thai snacks to handmade coconut ice cream (only 20 Baht!), there’s something for everyone.
The dried fruits and chili snacks are also highly recommended for those looking to bring home some tasty souvenirs.
Behind the market, you’ll find Wat Don Wai Temple, a significant historical site that dates back to the reign of King Rama VI.
The temple is renowned for its serene atmosphere and historical importance. A particularly interesting feature of the temple is a silver stone, which, according to the guide, could only be built by individuals of high social status, such as royalty or noblemen.
This practice is rooted in Thai Buddhist traditions, where the laying of sacred stones—known as sima stones—is a highly meritorious act, often reserved for those with significant standing.
This adds a fascinating layer of cultural depth to your visit, as you can witness firsthand how history and tradition are woven into the very fabric of the temple.
While the market is a fantastic place to shop and explore, it's important to stay vigilant. My tour guide cautioned us about pickpockets in the area, especially in crowded spots.
Please be reminded to keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings to ensure your visit remains enjoyable.
Overall, Wat Don Wai Floating Market is a perfect blend of culture, history, and gastronomy.

Read moreThis market is not much different from any other thai market apart from the lack of westerners! During our time there I was the only westerners walking around that we could see, with that in mind very few vendors spoke much English.
A lot of stalls selling everything from cherries, to macadamia nuts to spices and clothes, everything you would see on any other market will be found here. Walking around is easy as the land is concrete so would also be suitable for wheelchairs or buggys.
Along the river is lined with thai restaurants selling thai food not catered for a westerners pallet, nor will you find an english menu so be prepared to use a translation app or point to the foods you would like to order (unless you can speak thai) the restaurant we choose had nice tasty food that came well presented and a good portion size too! Restaurants open 07:00 to 17:00 but I think some of the fruit/toys/clothes stalls stay open until 18:00. There are old farmers that also come around in their boats to sell their hard worked vegetables or fruits so try get a riverside seat so you can buy a few bits from them!
If you are in the area and want a non westernised Thai market then this...
