After visiting this beach with my family I can most definitely say that Laem Yai is one of those spots that feels like a well-kept secret. It's absolutely gorgeous and has a tranquil feeling, perfect for anyone looking to relax away from the crowds.
The beach has beautiful white sand that feels soft underfoot, and the water is crystal clear with just the right temperature for a swim (this applies to end July and beginning of August… different seasons might have different conditions). Also great is that there are comparatively fewer tourist here than at the more popular beaches such as Coral Cove. There are hardly any tourists, so you can really enjoy the peace and quiet.
Despite what some other reviews have said, getting to Laem Yai is pretty easy. There are plenty of roads leading to the beach. If you’re up for a snack or some coffee, check out AQUABICA 101 Coffee and Eatery. It’s right on the beachfront and serves decent food prepared by the kind family that runs the eatery. It’s also a great place to take breaks from swimming or sunbathing
If you’re into sea life, Laem Yai won’t disappoint. The beach is home to tons of fish and corals, especially if you’re willing to swim a bit further out into the reef. Some of the corals are so vibrant you can see their colors from above the water! You'll find all sorts of marine life—fish, crabs, urchins, and healthy coral formations. Just be prepared to swim about 120 meters out, which is still safe there are rocks to stand on even that far out, and buoys to keep boats away from the reef. (Water only is roughly 7 meters deep that far out and the drop ist quite rapid so the water is still only 1.5 meters deep when roughly 80 meters out). If you are not willing to swim that far out then rest assured: the beach still has abundant sea weed that shelters various fish, many crabs and shrimp and numerous interesting rock and coral formations close to shore.
If you’re on Koh Samui and want a break from the busier beaches, Laem Yai is definitely...
