Tinubu Square is a small, round and compact park located within the very heart of Lagos Island. It is bordered by major roads like Broad Street, Nnamdi Azikiwe Road, Tinubu Street etc. All leading out of the Square, like arteries from the heart, to different locations on the Island. Initially, it was named Ita Tinubu, after the slave trading merchant and woman of valour, Madam Efunroye Tinubu. Then the Square was subsequently later named by Nigeria's First Republic Leaders to Independence Square after Nigeria gained independence in 1960. Finally, its name was later change again to just Tinubu Square afterwards. Probably in an effort to make its name as simple as can be and also point to its origin of nomenclature. Various state governments have tried to give it a face lift and increase its appeal, from the derelict outlook it once had. When it was a place of defecation, in and within its fountains, and abject delinquency. A place, where touts and homeless persons call their home. Recently, apart from various petty traders cluttering and trading round about it. Activities which various governments have tried to stop. There is little or no park activities going on in there due to its size and location. Anyone looking for recreation and relaxation should dare not go looking for one there. It is one of or the most busiest and horrendously noisiest place on the Island due to the traffic that has encompassed it, round about and the activities of people, too. Consequently, it is a park of just symbolic importance. A place of historical connotation - indicating an era where Lagosains have once been, in culture, trade and its people.

I thought this was a really interesting place to be. The fountains, sculptures and statues give it a contemporary and attractive feel. It's situated opposite the Methodist Church of Trinity and opening hours are from 9AM to 9PM on both weekends and weekdays. I loved how there were many places to sit. It's a good place for small parties and meetups. The best part is that entry is free. The environment is clean although water from the fountains seem to be constituting a puddle in some areas of the park which was not well taken care of the last time I visited.

Tinubu Square is an Iconic landmark in Lagos Island specifically dedicated to Madam Tinubu. The Park at the center of the square when newly constructed had refreshing water fountain that also doubled as a shelter and oasis to wildlife. It previously was restricted to recreational activities. However, due to government negligence and citizens ignorance of the value of such recreational facilities, it has lost it's appeal and allure, resulting in unfettered access to the homeless and miscreants alike who now call the place home and stage to display their wares.

I loved finding this place and taking photos in and of it. It's all shades of beautiful. Water fountain, sitting area, the pigeons chilling on the bird sculpture, interesting sculptures and the fact that it makes a good backdrop for stunning pictures makes Tinubu Square a place to visit. It's just off the popular Lagos Island Market and flanked by so many skyscrapers. You can get a good view of the streets if you just want to sit around and enjoy the air after a day's work. The water could do with some purifying though.
