I have done a few food tours or variations thereof before, but our tour with Yummy Istanbul was my very first walking food tour. Every part of this 10-stop tour was walked, except for a short ferry ride from Europe to Asia (and this part of the premise of dining on two continents). Walking gives you so much more opportunity to notice little details that you would have missed otherwise and it gives you a feel for the city that cannot easily be replicated in a single venue restaurant or driving from venue to venue…and in a city that consists of layer upon layer of rich history and culture, this was incredible. Every stop on the tour, whether it be breakfast or ice cream, visits to the markets or walking and snacking our way along little back alleys just felt so incredibly authentic and we loved it. Here, yes, credit has to go to the city and its incredible cuisine, but in equal measure, it has to go to our guide, Leyla. An avid foodie with a passion for her city, she not only looked after our culinary needs, but she was quick to share not only the history of the dishes that we enjoyed but also her extensive knowledge of the city’s history, making every stop and turn to feel like a little adventure. This tour took virtually a whole day and even though we had limited time in the city and there were so many more things that we wanted to do and see, I would, if given the chance for a do-over, choose to do this tour again. I cannot recommend it enough. As far as the food itself is concerned, be warned… it is a lot (and Leyla did warn us and despite this, we were ill-prepared for how much food there was). I found most of what was on offer incredibly delicious but the stand-out items that I would recommend keeping an eye out for were the grilled olives, hazelnut spreads, pomegranate Turkish delight, baklava, dolma, lentil soup (seriously, the best soup, I have ever eaten) and the Menemen.

Three of us recently took the "Taste of Two Continents" walking tour and it ended up being one of the highlights of our week in Istanbul both because of the food, but especially because of our guide Tunç. Licensed and local tour guide Tunç, led us on a six hour tour starting at the Egyptian bazaar, where we began with a full Turkish breakfast. From there, we had quick tastes of olives, simit, cheese, and Turkish donuts, before having a smaller second breakfast of soup, either lamb or a tomatoey lentil. A 20 minute ferry ride took us across the Bosphorus, to Kadikoy, on the Asian side of Istanbul where we had a large lunch of Iskender Kebap (a special sliced kebab on bread served with a huge dollop of yoghurt) followed by a later smaller lunch of pide. Along the way we had baklava, Turkish coffee, chai, mussels, and a variety of other Turkish treats. Tunç was the ideal host, knowledgeable and engaging. He was able to provide plenty of information about the food we were eating, but more than that, he was able to impart real information about Turkey’s history, culture, politics, and day-to-day life and experiences in Istanbul. He sprinkled the tour with stories of his family back in the small town he comes from, which provided an interesting, and often amusing counterpoint to life in Istanbul. The sunset ferry ride back across the Bosphorus was the icing on the cake, topping off a day of delicious, uniquely Turkish food, hosted by the perfect guide.

My bro booked the Yummy tour via GetYourGuide. Euro 125/ person. We had 5 persons to join the tour. Frankly speaking,I won’t recommend this tour to others. It is not worth the money. Our female food tour guide called Bahar (Spring in English). The tour started at 9:30 am and end at 14:30 pm. She brought us to the Egypt Bazaar and had traditional Turkish breakfast and Beyran Lamb Soup. We asked for cappuccino- she wasn’t happy with it. She brought us to the East Part of Istanbul and all shops were not famous and no customers at all. During the tour , she limits the persons to have extra Midye. everyone can just have max 1–2 pieces for each flavours. My younger bro had serious diarrhea after the tour. She brought us to the Iskander Diner Kebab. Everyone was just offered 1 small plate for 4-5 persons to share. We asked for another extra plate - she wasn’t happy and showed us a bit unhappy attitude and face. All in all, Euro 125/ person is not worth the money. All cheap and NOT delicious food and not famous restaurants. In Austria , we always want to give and show people the best and great quality food and hoping people will come back again. In Istanbul, people just care for money and not giving the best quality food and experience to people ?! NOT recommended !!

A great food and history tour of Istanbul. Our guide Selen was fun and gave such insightful and interesting insights into the culture of the city. We started the day with a full Turkish breakfast and a visit to the spice market in the Old City, then our guide expertly helped us all board the ferry for lunch and various treats in the Asian part of the city. She made sure everyone was well taken care of, especially those in our group with dietary restrictions. There’s a lot of food on this tour - you won’t be hungry! But be warned: there is A LOT of walking across uneven, crowded streets, many going straight uphill (such is Turkey). I walk a lot at home and wore good, supportive shoes - and still came back with blistered feet. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that at the end, our guide got those of us staying in the Old City back on the ferry, but then we were left to our own devices to find our way back to our hotel. It was our first day in the city, we were EXHAUSTED after the tour, the taxis in the city suck … so getting back ended up being an ordeal. It was a less than good end to an otherwise great day.

Breakfast and the Iskender Kebab were the highlights for me. Started out well but after 1-2 hours started to fizzle for me. Great food options everywhere we went. For the price tag however, our guide Layla seemed distracted with something. Several of us in the group did try to get more information throughout the tour but she would walk very far ahead and keep conversations to what felt like a script. Some of the good stops were strange such as we stopped at a “famous” place from Chefs Table and the food was mediocre for what we experienced elsewhere on the tour and by ourselves. When we gave her the feedback it was met with “its not known for this mezze or lahmacun” which begged the question why we would come here if there are clearly better places. Tour ended on a bit of a low note, she rushed off and nearly forgot to tell us how to use the ferry on our own until another member of our group quickly caught her before she left.

I have done a number of food tours around the world but this was one of the best. Ali was an excellent guide with great enthusiasm for the food and able to talk knowledgeably about a number of topics. It is a long tour but worth the time as you get to see quite a bit of Istanbul, including both the European and Asian sides. The food stops were all great and well organised. After meeting at a coffee shop not far from the central tourist district, we visited the Spice Bazaar while Ali picked up some food for breakfast, which we ate at a local restaurant - this was probably my favourite stop as everything was delicious particularly the cheese and honey and meats. We then took the ferry over the Bosphorus to "Asia" and enjoyed pickles, an excellent meze lunch, a quick stop for mussels and a couple of dessert stops! Well worth the money.
