The Mosaic artifacts of the ancient city of Zuegma which is becoming totally  submerged by the waters of the Birecik Dam over the Euphrates river are excavated beginning 1992 & currently housed in the largest Mosaic Musuem in the world in the city of Gaziantep. Some artifacts dated back to the bronze age . First established in 300BC the city was an important military garrison during the time of Alexander the Great .It was the Romans who named the city Zuegma. During 1-2 AD it became an important trading post on the Silk Road & its population thrived on trade living a lavish & affluent lifestyle. They decorated the floor of their villas with mosaics comprised of the colourful stones of the Euphrates. Almost 65,000 tablets have been excavated from the site evidenced of its importance to the Roman Empire. On display in the Museum are floor mosaic, hamam mosaic as well as wall mosaics. One piece of mosaic which is equally famous as the Mona Lisa painting is that of the 'Gypsy'  - it is still not known if it is a semblance of Alexander the Great or a princess or some important resident of Zuegma.

The museum is impressive! A huge collection of mosaics made 2-3 thousand years ago! There are a very few such museums in the world and I am very glad that I managed to get here. The mosaics are very beautiful, their sizes are amazing. It's incredible that 2000+ years ago people could already make such beauty out of pebbles :) The flooded city of Zeugma, from where all these mosaics were taken, is located 100-200 km away and you can also go there. We also saw the most popular mosaic “Gypsy” - it is located in a black room where mysterious music is playing and nothing distracts you from contemplation. The mosaic really looks extraordinary and it is a piece of a huge broken and not restored mosaic. There is a QR code for the audio guide on the museum tickets (the MuzeKart application), be sure to install the application on your phone, scan the QR code to listen to the history of the exhibits. The app is free, you only need a ticket. Ask the cashier to help you with the installation. I definitely recommend this museum to everyone who will be in Gaziantep or just passing by.
