Elevator, which is one of the building blocks of the city identity and gives its name to the district where it is located, is one of the most important historical centers of İzmir. The tower structure was built in 1907 by Nesim Levi, a businessman of the period, a member of the Provincial Administrative Council and the owner of Bayraklı stores, and donating his house for the construction of Karataş Hospital, on the area where the quarries are located. Connected with a 155-step staircase, the Elevator is a street elevator that has been realized with the aim of facilitating the transportation between two axes by connecting the upper and lower parts of the district, Mithatpaşa Street and Şehit Nihat Bey Street, with the universal technology of the period.

free tourist spot that must visit in izmir. this historical elevator has been operating for over 100 years since 1907, locals said it is the first ever elevator built in Izmir as well as in the whole Turkey. fun fact: the elevator was first run by hydro power, with super slow pace. people still wait for it despite its slow speed because it is the only way to go up the mountain without walking the slopes or hundreds of steps. at the bottom of the elevator, there’s a lot of artistic cafe and restaurant, there’s another cafe up the elevator with a classic elegant magestic style too, where you can enjoy a traditional turkish tea with the magnificent Izmir golf view.

You can see a cool view of the city from the top of the elevator! It connects two streets and was built in 1907 to help the old people and pregnant weman. It's free to visit and you don't need to buy tickets. We reached there around noon and it was weekend but it was not crowded and we could go up easily. It's just an elevator, don't expect to see more :) although there is a good café at the top and you can have a snack with a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea and the Izmir city 🙃 The prices are good and affordable and believe me if you don't drink tea there with that nice panoramic view you would regret it for the rest of your life!

Liked it, very comfortable and useful elevator. If you have a all-day walk and wish to skip 234 steps on the stairs on the way home or to a cafe uptown, you should definitely try this elevator! That is a superbly preserved historical building at the end of the restaurant street with a great architecture and atmosphere. Even if you visit this sight on a weekday evening, you won’t have to wait more than 5 minutes. Each cabin accommodates 10 persons and yet no one feels sandwiched between others. Doors open and close automatically, there is a nice music inside, some historical facts and accompanying photos. The entrance is free.

I had a unique experience in İzmir tonight, visiting a historic elevator and enjoying a stunning view of the city. At the top, a beautiful restaurant and café made the moment even more special, with a cup of Turkish coffee completing the experience. Built in 1907 by wealthy Jewish businessman Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, the İzmir Historical Elevator served as a vital connection for the Karataş district, where residents once had to climb 155 steps. Constructed with Marseille bricks and originally steam-powered, it was later converted to electricity, standing today as a symbol of İzmir’s history and charm.

In 1907, a Jewish philanthropist named Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu built a 40-meter tall elevator tower to tackle the accessibility of problem climbing 155-step stairs from of Mithatpaşa Road to Halil Rifat Paşa district on the hillside. 😮 This street elevator was run by steam engine in the early days and then switched to hydropower, which now relies on electric power since 1985. 💡 Nowadays, it's a great experience to be up there in a cafe at sunset to enjoy the view and your coffee when visiting Izmir! 🌇☕ #Izmir
