Oops. Apparently, I mistakenly stated it was Kelly that stayed with me, when it was Grace, the younger guide, although Kelly did a wonderful job leading the group.
Honestly, the experience would have been much better for me if I was able to share it with my husband, who decided not to come along due to problems with a poorly trained and ornery horse. We were never on horses before and neither were 3 others in our group, which were grandkids of a couple there. Maybe the guides that went with you felt there were too many novices for one group, and of course, they couldn't split the family with kids up, so they were able to get my husband to quit by giving him a very large horse that kept bucking and pulling the reins out of his hands. One of the guides even punched the horse, which made the horse more irritable and upset. Instead of insisting on a different horse, my husband just stayed behind at the stables; he was being cautious, especially not knowing what the ride was going to be like regarding terrain, etc., and didn’t want to venture out on a horse that was not cooperating, especially since they kept repeating that you had to be able to handle the horses through the ‘jungle’, or they would only stop and eat the vegetation and not proceed on the path. It was a terrible experience for him, plus they charged me full price for both of us anyway! I did go out with them, and Kelly took really good care of me. She made sure I was always close by and that I felt safe and secure, which I did. The ride was pretty easy, considering there were no mountains or anything like that. The first part of the ride is on a road with cars, but the horses and cars were fine and seemed used to each other. Second part is uphill slightly on a sand path to the beach. It’s narrow, with bushes on both sides, but again, the horses and guides did a fine job helping everyone get through. Then on to the beach, where you were in the warm beautiful waters of TCI. The guides took pictures with your own camera while there and walked us about a half mile or so in the water and then back to the stables on the same route. Exciting, maybe not, but for someone who just wants to scratch off riding a horse from their bucket list, good enough. So...my suggestion is, if you have never ridden before and if they give you, I think his name is Pilot, insist on another horse or you’ll be...
Read moreFor my partners experience and the great staff I will give the company 4 stars, but my experience was definitely a 3 star experience. Provo ponies has great reviews that represent their great service and good experience. What it doesn’t represent is the mishaps that can happen during the ride. I went with my partner who had a great time - my experience was quite different.
I am a beginner rider with no experience. Many of the horses have personalities - like all of us. My horse - Jammin’ was a bit of a pest…as the employees said themselves. The horse was hard to control, coming from a 105lb woman, with not a lot of muscle. It was hard to stay balanced, without worrying about being jolted in certain directions.
There were a couple of incidents on our ride - but my main point is that it could be difficult for beginners to feel comfortable riding these horses. The horses have strong personalities and they will do as they like - leaving you with little to no control.
The staff was very helpful. After a couple minutes, I came to the realization that I didn’t have much control over my horse. I immediately called over an instructor and was attached to an instructor and his horse after that. Once we were in the water, I had gone on by myself - unattached…that’s when my horse had gotten into a little quarrel with another horse. This consisted of loud horse noises, jolt like movements and some kicking. For a beginner it could be terrifying!
Overall, the staff is great and if you are up for a ride definitely go. But all of these reviews do not do the experience justice - there are definitely incidents and riders who are nervous for the majority...
Read moreI wrote a review on trip advisor which management responded to and I’d like to respond to that because it was incorrect. Trip advisor doesn’t allow me to do that. While the staff was great, the 90 minute ride was not 90 minutes. Management stated that they cut it short due to a storm that day. However there was no storm that day, we were out the entire afternoon in the same location and not one drop of rain fell nor did they communicate to us why we were heading back early. One of the horses was bucking which resulted in having to be lead on a leash the entire rest of the trip by a guide. We were told the horse had eye surgery to remove the eye 3 weeks prior, managements review response said that was not accurate. We can only go by what the staff advised us. Management advised the reason the horse bucked was because we did not leave enough room which is also inaccurate, the entire ride was “nose to tail” and the horse that was invading the space of our horse was a guide. Upon initial mounting at the stable, this horse also collapsed his front two legs to try and roll in the mud while having my daughter on it. Perhaps management should have decided to switch the horse at this time. In summary, the 90 minute ride was not 90 minutes, management boasts side by side riding but it really is nose to tail, and the route taken to the water is an undesirable paved road with car traffic and construction. Not...
