I am a little biased about Penmon Point or better known around here as Trwyn Du, as I practically grew up on this beach. Not your typical beach of sand but instead a stunning picturesque pebble beach with some fantastic rock pools.
There is an access/parking fee to get to the beach, after passing through Penmon Priory and Church (well worth a visit in its own right with with plenty of history to explore from the dovecote, priory, church and St Seiriol's well). A short drive/walk alongside the open fields and you are immediately greeted with the stunning view of Puffin Island and the locally famous lighthouse. There is also a small cafe and toilets on the right hand side and the coastguards station.
There are a number of paths leading onto different parts of the beach, whether you bare left down the steeper paths ebbed into the drop down to the pebbles or head straight on, to the more accessible paths. It is a tad uneven at places but that is nature.
Penmon Point has gained a lot of publicity in the last couple of years because of the ever so beautiful bioluminescent plankton that appears after a particularly hot day. Granted it does involve a late night trip down to catch it's beautiful glow with the waves. But always be aware of the nocturnal wild life, which thrives down there.
This beach is very popular for fishing, in particular bass and mackerel if you time it right and venture on to the rocks.
Penmon Point is also a hot spot for photographers again particularly at night, due to its low light pollution. The stars, moon and the occasional comet are an outstanding back drop to the lighthouse!
Come rain or shine Trwyn Du is always...
Read moreWe arrived in our Motorhome late afternoon and it was still £10 to park for the day even though they stop charging at 6pm. £1 for cars. Several camper vans arrived after 6pm and people set up BBQs and played music. It was really nice though as everyone were nice and well behaved. The atmosphere was good. At high tide the lighthouse is cut off but at low tide you can walk across the rocks to it. There’s lots of rock pools to one side- some rocks quite slippery when wet. Whereas the other side has a pebble slopping beach. The views were stunning whichever way you looked, especially when the sun was setting. We decided to stay overnight and paid the attendant another £10 at 6am on his rounds. Which covered us till his rounds at 6am the following morning. About a dozen vehicles left including us between 5.30 and 5.50am 🤣🤣🤣🤣There’s no overnight facilities whatsoever so it’s only really possible to stay overnight if you are self sufficient. Dogs roamed about freely but supervised and everyone appeared to be picking up after them! I’d go again just to watch the...
Read moreThere is a toll for passing Penmon Priory (or for parking there) (update June 2025 - £3.50 for a car -includes parking at the Priory, Chapel, Seriol's Well and Dovecoat, and access onto road down to Penmon lighthouse, and parking there). Tthere is some off road parking on the road side before the Priory you can use for free, but its about 20 mins walk from there with an uphill then a downhill on a wide road. The road has mostly been resurfaced recently but watch for the speed humps so take it slow if you're in a car or on a bike (no toll for bikes or pedestrians!)
Penmon point has The Pilot Cafe which offers a wide range of food, snacks ice cream, meals, coffee, tea and cake, alcohol, postcards, games, buckets and spades etc. Indoor and outdoor seating.
The point has a pebble beach with views over the Menai Straight and to the nearby Puffin Island and of the lighthouse. There is a footpath along the shore to explore more views. A great spot for birdwatching. Boat trips to Puffin Island are available from Beaumaris. Rockpools...
