I wouldn't pay again the £8 fee to go into this single room (it is one small room, not a museum, and half the displays were "away"), it felt like a waste of time and money, and upsetting to see beautiful neolithic artifacts treated with so little care.
The bone awls used for piercing material had no label, how could a person looking around the museum know what they are or what they're for? They are such important evidence of neolithic clothing, and there was no written information on neolithic clothing at all. There is a mannequin with some cool visual estimations about neolithic clothing...but no plaque or explanation at all about why we have these estimations of neolithic clothing
There are now only two stone axes on display when there used to be a lot more. There was barely any information about the axes, not even a simple explanation to say that one on the left was made of flint, and the other of greenstone, and nothing about their estimated origin.
If you can get in for free with your national trust membership it'll be a fun 5 minutes, but for me & my partner who travelled a very long way it was a disappointment and if I wasn't such an anxious person I would have asked for a refund... Just leaving this review so others don't waste...
Read moreCan't call it a museum. It was a small exposition and not worth it if you have to pay for it. We had a national trust overseas pass, so therefore free of charge. Gardens were reasonable, but also for those to visit you have to pay separately if not have a national trust membership. Even had a discussion with the person who sells the ticket, because he stated that I had to pay for parking. I new that with the overseas pass parking is included. He said with not a nice tone, that's only for yearly membership. I wouldn't give me the tickets for museum and garden! So I looked it up and showed him the mail and then he said, angry; here you have your tickets and looked at me if I had done something wrong. Not the way other staff acts towards guests. We could not visit house because it was closed. A lot of national trust houses are closed at this...
Read moreOpening hours are inaccurate. The staff member closing the place down as we arrived (following a two hour journey to get here) unhelpfully told us to check the National Trust website, and that they’d given up on trying to change Google.
There seems to be an outdated lack of understanding of the fact that most people plan their journeys and opening hours via Google Maps.
Anyway, since this review was otherwise quite negative, here’s a pretty smoke ring emerging...
