🌹 Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park - A Hidden Gem in South Belfast 🌳 Visited Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park today and it was a truly enchanting experience. Nestled in south Belfast, this park is home to the City of Belfast International Rose Garden, which is simply breathtaking, especially during the Summer Rose Fair in July. The roses are a sight to behold, with a vibrant array of colors and fragrances that captivate the senses. The park offers so much more than just roses. We wandered through winding paths that led to hidden secret gardens, each more beautiful than the last. The tranquil Japanese-style garden, complete with serene water features, was perfect for quiet contemplation. For families, there’s a well-equipped children’s playground, barbecue area, picnic tables, and a convenient car park. The only thing that could improve this wonderful space is a bit more investment in the children's playground. It would also be fantastic if Wilmont House was open to the public – I understand there are cost considerations, but it would certainly draw visitors from far and wide. The park’s rich history adds to its charm. Originally part of the Wilmont estate from the mid-18th century, it was donated to the people of Belfast by Lady Dixon in 1959 in memory of her late husband, Sir Thomas. The estate's past, including its role during World War II, is fascinating and adds depth to the visit. Covering over 128 acres, with rolling meadows, woodland, and various gardens, Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park is an ideal spot for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape. Highly recommend a visit, especially during...
Read moreStunning gardens and kept in a wonderful way. there is such an alouring attractive number of rose beds, I simply cannot enjoy each of them in 1 visit. I have just 1 problem, toilet facilities, or the fact that there are none, and as a disabilid visitor, with 4 kids, this is an issue that has prevented us to visit the great gardens this year.
Visited recently during rose week with my then 7and 8y old along with my sister in law and her 2 even younger kids. We arrived mid morning and were suprised to be the first people there. We toured several roses, which was fun, and a treat for my nose. However the route becomes confusing as the paths intermingle. We ended up doubled back at places.
We came across a marquee, and ventured in. Activities for children, info desk, and a short time later entertainment. There was a few rides setting up as we were leaving. The price of 1 was £4 to ride a basic round about. Kids were upset at the fact they weren't operating for another two hours and then the price.
We did have a decent time, but amenities...
Read moreLovely walks on good paths through beautiful Rose gardens and surrounded by woodland. Lots of picnic tables - in these days of lockdown, a good thing. We didn't use them but there is a coffee shop (which tbh wasn't great in the past but may be making good coffee) and a playground for kids. We really enjoyed our walk here and will definitely be back complete with a picnic!!!
Just an edit!! These gardens are truly lovely but the toilets are a disgrace. I have had to use them twice - the floor was disgustingly dirty, wet and smelly both times and I have tried to avoid ever using them again. I don't know who is responsible for their upkeep (maybe Belfast Council!?) but they are appalling in such a...
