Liverpool Castle Replica, nestled in Lever Park near Rivington, Bolton, is a captivating historical folly that offers visitors a unique blend of history, nature, and exploration. Commissioned by industrialist Lord Leverhulme in 1912, this unfinished replica was inspired by the original Liverpool Castle, which stood from the 13th to the 18th century. Constructed using locally quarried gritstone, the replica was intentionally designed to resemble the ruins of the original castle post-English Civil War. Although construction ceased after Lord Leverhulme's death in 1925, the structure remains a testament to his vision .

Visitor Experience

Open 24/7 and free to access, the castle is a popular destination for families, hikers, and history enthusiasts. Visitors often describe it as a "hidden gem" with "beautiful scenery" and "great views," especially when exploring the nearby Lower Rivington Reservoir. The site features multiple doorways and passageways, making it an engaging spot for children to explore. However, some areas may be challenging for those with mobility issues, and the presence of graffiti and litter has been noted by some visitors .

Getting There

For those traveling by public transport, the nearest bus stop is Rivington & Blackrod High School, approximately a 13-minute walk from the castle. Bus lines such as the 125, 516, 575, and 576 serve the area. If you're driving, free parking is available at Rivington Reservoir Car Park off Rivington Lane. From there, a tree-lined footpath leads to the castle, though it's worth noting that the path may not be suitable for prams or wheelchairs .

Nearby Attractions

The castle is part of the Rivington Pike and Liverpool Castle Circular trail, a 5.2-mile loop that offers a moderately challenging hike through scenic areas, including Rivington Terraced Gardens and Rivington Pike. The trail provides stunning views and is open year-round, making it a favorite among hikers and nature lovers .

Final Thoughts

Liverpool Castle Replica offers a unique blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty. While the site could benefit from more maintenance, its charm and the surrounding landscapes make it a worthwhile visit. Whether you're interested in history, photography, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk, this spot provides a...

As a huge fan of small local attractions this has everything, it's small, it's local, and it's an attraction.

This half scale replica of a castle was deliberately built to be a ruin, and so it is a pristine ruin with a few rooms and 'crumbled' towers to peer around. It's situated alongside Rivington reservoir and makes a great stop off as part of a dog and child friendly walk, with the lake on one side and paths cross crossing the forested areas and meadow areas.

A flat, relatively mud free well draining, area in the centre of the castle is ideal for picnics or short stopoffs too.

Mild vandalism to the tourist friendly explanation plaques, as well as the occasional bagged and hung dog poo, feels quite fitting as part of a semi rural northern small local attraction, as does the sometimes sparse parking and low quality paths that mean wheelchair users would struggle unless they brought their quad bike.

Altogether though, five stars - expect little and...

Considering I’ve lived in the north-west of England for the majority of my life, so far… I had never visited Liverpool Castle before today. Oh wow… I can’t believe I haven’t been there before! It’s filled with cool little hiding places, loads of adventurous little climbs up stonewalls to be had, should you wish, there’s plenty of space to “camp out” for the duration so, if you’re taking the kids be sure to pack a picnic. I’d imagine it would be heaps more fun during the night, maybe an impromptu ghost walk? I’ll bet it gets filled with young courting couples and Young free and single individuals eager and aching to sew some seeds. No tickets, entrance fee or subscription required here it’s all free, just don’t take the P*ss by leave your rubbish behind yeah! just think of the wild animals eating your trash and probably choking to death, right there, at...

A hidden gem !! Been to Rivington for over 45 years and never knew about it until today. Absolutely beautiful, you would actually think it was there for many centuries, though it was only built in 1912. It’s definitely a must for all to see and feel like what it might have been, some believe it was built on top of a old burial ground this may have been to protect the ground forever. I learnt a little about it from some local people about the castle. A local school also brings its students here regularly. Copied from the website Lancashire Past :- Lord Leverhulme commissioned a replica of Liverpool Castle to be built on his Rivington estate of Lever Park, near Horwich. He had read a work about the original castle by E.W. Cox written in 1892. Definitely worth a visit you will not be disappointed 👌

A sunny afternoon walk with the family and the dog. The Castle itself is ruins that you can walk around, and is situated at the end of a path about 10 minutes walk from where we were parked. No shop, toilet, at the Castle ruins, and although access is open ( no door ) there are rough stones, (check out the entrance photo for an idea of accessibility) "probably a bumpy experience" and not wheelchair friendly in some parts of the ruin sections. Paths leading off from the entrance!! Straight on to go back to parking or we went right if facing the entrance. This path was popular with dog walkers. 🐕‍🦺🦮 NOTE : Parking was a gamble with whether we were going to get a space!! Luckily I wasn't driving 🫣 and we managed to park. 👍😁 Really busy.

Sep 2022: situated more than 40 miles away from Liverpool, the castle here at Rivington tells the story of Liverpool’s past. It was built in 1912 by soap factory boss William Lever, who also founded Port Sunlight. Based on the bank of Rivington reservoir the castle is actually a replica of a castle which once stood in Liverpool City Centre on the site that’s now occupied by Derby Square and Liverpool Crown Court. Shame about the graffiti, litter and lack of responsibility a minority of people take. Takes about 10 minutes to walk round, or you could have a picnic here.
