I started my journey from Rivington Hall Barn car park, which was conveniently free of charge. From there, I took my time walking through The Japanese Lake, Rivington Terraced Gardens, The Italian Lake, and Pigeon Tower before finally reaching Rivington Pike Tower. The whole walk took me about 2 hours, at a relaxed pace, allowing me to fully enjoy the scenery.
The route is fantastic for hiking, with breathtaking views and plenty of great spots to pause and appreciate nature. However, some sections of the path can be rocky and slippery, especially after rain. If you're planning to visit, I'd definitely recommend trekking poles for extra stability.
When we arrived at Rivington Pike Tower, the panoramic view was incredible! You can see the whole of Horwich, including landmarks like the Toughsheet Community Stadium and Lower Rivington Reservoir—a truly rewarding sight after the hike up.
Overall, worth every step, with stunning scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. A must-visit for anyone who loves...
Read moreParked at the Pigeon Tower car park, walking up to the Pigeon Tower, then Rivington Pike Tower, then down to the bungalow remains, down & over the Lever 7 arch bridge then over to the Great Lawn & the Terrace Gardens. Then went back to the car & drove across to Rivington Reservoir car park, walking along the reservoir’s eastern bank to Liverpool Castle & the main centre at Great House. Toilets are available at Great House & Rivington Reservoir car parks. Car parking is free (so is popular!)
A decent free day out, but personally I wouldn’t bother with the Liverpool Castle folly. I expected a better view of the reservoir from there but there was too much tree cover & the ‘castle’ is nothing out of the ordinary & well away from the other sites. The remains of the bungalow & gardens are interesting & they have you wondering what it would have been like up here during its pomp in Lever’s lifetime. The view from the Rivington Pike tower is of course a decent one...
Read moreRivington Pike Tower offers some great views from the summit and an enjoyable moderately challenging walk up through the maze like terraced gardens designed and created by Lord Lever.
I've been walking this route for the past 20 years and it has become increasingly popular at weekends meaning the ample parking does actually get full and overflows on sunny days. Wheelchair users could perhaps manage the lower Rivington walk around the lake to Liverpool Castle folly but the steep winding paths up to the Top of Rivington Pike could prove too difficult.
The Tower sits proudly like a beacon on top of the hill and appears like a solid stone structure with old carvings etched in its walls. However, when viewed from above the tower is actually revealed...
