Clifton Hall — Attraction in Clifton

Lovely little find. All that remains from a much larger hall is a central tower. Entrance is free to go inside and explore. English Heritage have renovated what was soon to be a complete ruin very sympathetically, so you can see the floor structures as well as climb up to the balcony to look at the king post close up as well as look down through the restored rafters. The information plaque outside shoes the different lives of the building, pointing out where various additions were joined on....

Great Tower hidden behind Clifton Hill/Hall Farm which is just as interesting. Possible to go inside and climb a classic anti clockwise turret staircase. Well worth a visit to appreciate it's position. Was one of 3 towers/keeps guarding against marauding Scots. The others are at Hornby and Yanwath Halls. Askham...
